Men's Reviews - Round 8

Central District Lions v Sturt Sabres, Sat, May 8th, 8.15pm at Starplex
The game didn't start well for the Lions when the first two baskets of the night were 3s to Sturt's Darren Ng and Jacob Holmes. As the quarter progressed with further 3s to Holmes and Jan Warbout (2), the locals fell further behind. With less than 3 minutes of play remaining and scores at 32 – 6, Centrals coach Scott Whitmore would have known he was in for a long night. He may have taken some comfort that the Lions were able to outscore the top side for the remainder of the quarter and his team went on to win the second quarter 24 – 19. The Sabres came out firing after half time and at the ¾ time break, had blown the margin out to 32 points (90 – 58). The Sabres extended the lead further during the last quarter and with 7 minutes remaining brought up their 100th point after a basket to Mark Bauer. Jacob Holmes finished as game high scorer with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

Eastern Mavericks v Norwood Flames, Sat, May 8th, 8.15pm at Adelaide Hills
In the away match Norwood's Todd Matthews had a breakout first half with 16 points at 58%. Midway through the second quarter, Eastern had worked its way back into the match until Corey Ottey (Flames) scored 8 points including two 3s in just over a minute of play. Down 15 at halftime (50 – 35) Eastern looked in trouble but in the first 7 minutes of the 3rd quarter, Eastern outscored Norwood 16 -3 to charge back into the match 51 – 53, with Shane Breheny and Brad Hill doing the bulk of the scoring. 5 minutes into the last quarter, only 2 points separated the sides but in the blink of an eye with triples to Todd Matthews (1) and Andrew Webber (2) in consecutive plays, Norwood blew the margin back out to 13 points. Eastern never recovered, eventually losing 81 – 67.

Southern Tigers v Woodville Warriors, Sat, May 8th, 8.15pm at Morphett Vale
Both teams were evenly matched in the first quarter but the Warriors set up their victory with a 21 – 9 second quarter to break their run of 5 outs. Warriors Brady Brink and Mark Egel did the bulk of the scoring in the early part of the match to help establish the break and ultimately the win. During the last period the margin stayed around 20 points with Southern unable to bridge the gap. Brady Brink (20 points) went on to be the game high scorer and was well supported by Ben McKay (17 points) and Mark Egel (13 points). Warriors guard Cameron Wilson was credited with 10 assists of his teams total of 22 for the game. The Tigers struggled offensively with only Tristan Braithwaite (11 points) and Brandon Brine (10 points) in double figures. The Warriors win was a boost after their heart breaking loss the week before to the Rockets.

North Adelaide Rockets v West Adelaide Bearcats, Sat, May 8th, 6.15pm at Hillcrest
In a game where the 'big men' were expected to dominate, West's Chris Molitor and Blake Truslove combined for 36 points and North's 'bigs' Pero Vasiljevic (playing his first game for the club) and Nick Hambour combined for 27 points. Both pairs pulled down 15 rebounds each. West were slightly in front out of the clash of the tall timber. Bearcat Josh Bond was the difference between the two sides, scoring 20 points in his best return for the season including six 3s. West was able to set up the win with productive second and third quarters when they outscored the locals 39 – 17. North had its best return in the first quarter and outscored the visitors in the last but the damage was done in the 2nd and 3rd periods. North was not able to recover from being down 11 points at ¾ time. North's loss keeps them in 5th place, two games clear of the chasing pack while the win has West equal on points with Forestville and Norwood with all teams sitting just behind Sturt at the top of the table.
