The team at AFL Mackay has been busy hosting AFL clinics predominately in the Western and Central Highlands region for term 3. Participation numbers in areas such as Dysart, Middlemount, Glenden, Bowen and Moranbah have been promising in recent years, with AFL popularity and familiarity on the rise.
One of our new Auskick Centres for 2011, Coppabella State School has been a success story in itself. The small, mining community located just over 2 hours west of Mackay, has taken a keen interest in the sport of AFL. The entire school of approximately 40 students have participated in our Auskick sessions on a weekly basis throughout the term. All our staff are impressed by the way the students conduct themselves and we all agree they would have to be the one of the best behaved and most enthusiastic schools in the region. The students and teachers down the books for the afternoon and are always raring to kick a few goals against the teachers and coaches. Each week, we nominate an “Auskicker of the Week” who receives a prize as recognition. AFL is the first sport to run a structured and ongoing sporting program for the kids at Coppabella, with the primary purpose of encouraging physical activity in all regions of QLD.
On Saturday 27th August, the Central Highland’s AFL Carnival will take place in Moranbah at the Stevenson Sports Park. AFL Mackay Juniors invite all young aspiring AFL players involved in the Auskick Program to participate in the round-robin style carnival. An AFL Clinic will be hosted by our development, with the highlight of the day being the ‘Parents vs Kids’ match. All players and parents are welcome to stay and watch the Moranbah Bulldogs senior side take on the North Mackay Saints. The day will commence from 11am – 2pm. All welcome and encouraged to attend.
