In what was a fantastic night for football in Mackay, the Gold Coast SUNS Primary School Cup was held at Harrup Park on Monday evening. The new round-robin championships attracted 8 teams from the Mackay region, consisting of junior club players as well as many students that were playing AFL for the first time!
It was a great opportunity to showcase our great game, and impressive to see the amount of talented athletes we have in our region. The competition consisted of 2 initial rounds in a round-robin style format, followed by semi's and a grand final under lights on the main field at Harrup Park!
Congratulations to Mackay West SS and Alligator Creek State School, who put on an outstanding display in the closely contested Grand Final. After convincing wins to both teams in their semi final matches, Mackay West got away to an early 3 goal lead in the grand final. However, the courageous team effort of Alligator Creek allowed them to claw back into contention to be a goal behind with 5 minutes to go in the Grand Final. Special mention to Beau Saunders from Alligator Creek SS for being Named 'Best on Ground' in the Grand Final.
We would like to congratulate the 2011 Mackay AFL Gold Coast SUNS Cup champions Mackay West SS, who took out the Grand Final by two points over Alligator Creek SS. The Mackay West SS team will now represent the Mackay region in the QLD Country Pool finals against teams from Townsville and Cairns. The Gold Coast SUNS Cup Pool D Final will be held at the Murray Sports Complex in Townsville on Wed 22nd June, 2011. The winner of the competition will have the opportunity to complete at the new Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast against winning schools from across Queensland.
On behalf of AFL Mackay, we would like to thank the 7 schools for their efforts in the competition and in particular the teachers and parents for their time towards making this competition a success.
