AFL Victoria's Victorian Youth Girls Championships officially begin this week, with selection training for the South East, Bendigo and Western competitions underway.
Selection criteria for the team emphasise the following attributes:
- selection eligibility;
- attitude;
- training intensity;
- willingness and ability to make changes to improve their game;
- leadership;
- initiative;
- punctuality;
- attendance, including communication for absences;
- skills;
- fitness;
- active encouragement of other players;
- willingness to follow team plan as outlined by coach/selectors;
- positional needs of team; and,
- match form.
Players from all Youth Girls competitions are eligible for selection and are encouraged to attend the following selection training sessions:

2 - Sunday May 25 - 4pm - Atkins St Ground (North Bendigo JFC)

Players selected to play in the Victorian Championships will make up the initial squad for AFL Victoria's 2009 Youth Girls Academy.
The 2008 Victorian Youth Girls Championships will be played over two weekends in June, as part of AFL Victoria's annual Metropolitan Championships. This will be the first time that underage male and female representative football will be played together as part of the one competition. Whilst the boys will play for their league in under 14 and under 15 age groups, the girls will represent their Youth Girls league in an under 18 competition. The Youth Girls will be playing for the Nicole Graves Cup, named in honour of the founder of the Youth Girls competition.
Championship dates are:
- Qualification game 1: Bendigo v West – Saturday June 7
- Qualification game 2: South East v Bendigo – Monday June 9
- Qualification game 3: West v South East – Monday June 9
- Grand Final: Ladder 1 v Ladder 2 – Saturday July 5 - 10am - NOTE: NEW DATE
