Nelson Stone set a new national record in the 300m event at the University of Queensland on saturday. Competing with training partner Kuey Diew , one of australia's top junior 800m runners, Stone clocked 33.99 to become the first papua New Guinean to run under 34 seconds for the distance.
The 300m is an infrequently run event, often staged in warm up meets before a major Games or during an athletes "off season" . Subul Babo set the previous record at 34.26 in the warm up meet prior to the 1991 SP Games in Port Moresby.
Geoffrey Bai and Peter Pulu both had a best time of 33.9 seconds hand timing which is considered roughly equivalent to 34.04 seconds electronic timing.
