Blistering runs in the 200m and 400m by seventeen year old John Rivan and a hand timing National Record of 45.8 seconds for the womens 4*100m relay were the highlights of the national track and field championships in Lae over the weekend.15 year old Venessa Waro dominated the womens U18 division with outstanding runs in all three sprinting events, including a 57.9 seconds clocking in the 400m. Rivan was untouchable in the mens sprints,winning the open mens 400m in 48.3 seconds with an awesome finish that left the rest of the field including Kevin Kapmatana trailing.
More was to come from Rivan on Sunday when he produced a sensational finish in the 200m to power home first in 21.6 seconds.The open womens 4*100m relay squad of Helen Philemon , Toea Wisil , betty Burua and Mae Koime took the opportunity to have another competitive workout in preparation for the Commonwealth Games.Their time of 45.8 secs is the fastest ever hand time and compares well to national record of 45.99 secs electronic
