The AFL Canada (AFLC) Executive is pleased to appoint Steve Curran to
the position of AFLC Ontario Junior Development Officer. Steve's focus
during the 2010 season is to work with the Ontario AFL Executive, Aussie
X and the Ontario clubs to leverage the awareness currently generated
by schools clinics to create structured and sustainable junior leagues
in the Greater Toronto area. With the ten established clubs currently
operating in
Ontario, there is a significant opportunity to create the next
generation of footballers who will have the opportunity to play for
their club of choice.
To support this initiative, AFLC will be
launching a new junior development website. Using AFL Canada's Cankick
junior development brand, the website will target kids, parents and
teachers to create awareness of the Aussie Footy playing opportunities
in Canada. AFLC member leagues and clubs will be able to use the website
to post information, contact details and generate awareness of
provincial programs. This site will be a one stop shop for all junior
footy information.
Currently AFLC is working with BC Footy and
Alberta Footy to create junior support programs for 2010. More news to
come soon.
This is the culmination of allot of hard work in 2009.
The AFLC Executive working with its member leagues identified the need
for a consolidated focus on junior development across Canada.
With the creation of a 30 page long term business plan and outstanding
consecutive double digit player growth results, Greg Everett (AFLC
International Officer) met with Josh Vanderloo (AFL National
Participation Programs Manager) in Melbourne to discus the Canadian
opportunity. With AFL support by the way of increased funding, the
Canadian Junior development program was ready to go.
AFLC and
its members are excited by the future of junior football in Canada and
look forward to bringing this low cost team sport to every Canadian
Province.
