Well the Match of the Round this week comes to us via the Whitsunday Sea Eagles home game against the Mighty Moranbah Bulldogs, who may consider themselves unlucky going down to an undermanned Hawks outfit last weekend by a mere 20 points, while being one man short courtesy of a red card send off in the first quarter.
These two teams seem evenly matched and with both forward lines being amongst the Goals for the last few weeks, it could prove to be an old fashioned shootout, depending on the weather.
With Moranbah ahead of the Sea Eagles by a game and percentage on the ladder, positions may not change with either team posting a win, but if the Sea Eagles can snatch a win at home, the ladder starts to get interesting.
Sea Eagles coach Troy Weller said despite having half a side of new players this season, they are starting to gel well together, and although Troy thinks the Dogs are up and about this season, are not a side to be taken lightly, especially at home, he has had strong words with his selected side explaining that although still early in the season, this game is a make or break game for them, and the result could well be a season defining moment for them.
He told me that they will need to portray a full winning intent to take the points off the Dogs, and although due to work and other commitments, this team is not his strongest side, he still sees them as extremely capable. Troy said that part of his plan was to negate the Dogs very good midfield thus shutting off their avenue to score.
Withy regular full forward Matt Gallanski unavailable, Troy himself will slot into the full forward position, and with players like Tim Plummer and centre half back Robert Whitton, both moving well Troy is confident of a very good showing at their home ground.
Sebastian Curtis the coach of the Moranbah Bulldogs told me that he was very happy with his teams spirited effort against the Hawks last Saturday night, and in particular the way his players responded together, after a second quarter red card send-off of one of his prime movers.
Seb also said that although they will be missing Jason Looby from the forward line this week, he is expecting a big effort from Jarred Van Hees, and Michael Fisher in for his first season for the Dogs.
Sebastian also praised his midfield for helping the side score as often as they have this season, and despite the fact that a journey to the Whitsundays is always a tough road trip, he was confident that his side can come home with the chocolates.
Other matches this round are the Bakers Creek Tigers, play under lights at Harrup Park at 6.30pm, up against the Powerful Mackay City Hawks, who may well have an almost full squad to pick from this week, and the third game is North Mackay Saints on their home turf at Zeolla Park, versus the Eastern Swans, who also kicked a bag of Goals last week.
We hope the weather holds for this week’s round of matches and we see some good crowds going to the footy.
See you at the game !
