League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

The League leading Tracy Village Jets held off a strong first half challenge by the Uni Rebels to run out easy 80-60 winners in their clash Tuesday night at the DBA Stadium. The Bombers had to fight back in the first half as the Rebels charged out to a 25-22 lead after one quarter of play. Delsey Ah Wang and Lucy Adam did most of the scoring in the first quarter for the Rebels. The Bombers turned things in their favour with a strong second quarter to lead by one point at the half time break 38-37. The Bombers then overran the Rebels in the second half, outscoring them 42-23 on 39% shooting from the field. Six Bombers hit double figures with Kylie Duggan leading the way with 16, Tara Maxwell on 14, Sam Rioli & Danielle Totham on 12 each and Keisha Tinley & Demi Cubillo on 11 each. Ah Wang had a double-double for the Rebels with a game high 25pts and 19 rebounds while Adam hit 16 along with 11 boards.

Lightning v Eagles

Lightning bolted past the short-handed Eagles 67-37, handing the Birds their second loss in a row. Brittrany Ward, Jacinda Lambert and Kelli Sealy accounted for 52 of Lightning’s points on 32% shooting from the field. Lightning struck hard in the first quarter running off 22 points to 10 and kept on piling on the points…leading 40-15 at half time. Sharna Edwards and Leonie Snowdon led the Eagles with 10 each with Edwards also grabbing 10 boards. Ward led Lightning with a game high 20 points while Lambert had a double with 16 pts and 20 boards. Sealy also hit 16 points.

Palmerston v Ansett

Ansett kept the pressure on the frontrunners with a 55-34 win against Palmerston that keeps them locked into third place on the ladder. The win was the Blues sixth in a row. Both teams struggled to find the hoop in the first half with Ansett leading by a slim 21-18 margin, but after the break Lauren Flanegan led a 14-7 run that put the Blues in the drives seat for good. They then ran off 20 points to just 9 in the last quarter for the win. Poor shooting from the field didn’t help Palmerston’s cause at all, hitting just 12 of 54 at 22% and committing 27 turnovers that led to 17 points for Ansett. The Blues hit just 30%. Sam Drescher led the Blues with a game high 19 along with 15 boards and she had support from Nicole Silmon who hit 10. Nyssa Curwen and Jennifer Kinsella led Palmerston with 13 and 10.

League Men –Uni Rebels v Lightning

Lightning handed the Uni Rebels their second loss in a row with a hard fought 72-67 victory that keeps them atop the League ladder for the second week running. Lightning forged a 33-30 half time lead behind the sharpshooting of Zac White (19 & 10rebs), Jesse Bell (15) and Cameron Bailey (13), but the Rebels charged back into contention with a strong 22-15 third quarter that gave them a 52-48 lead with a quarter to go. Rebel Justin Eckhardt was on fire from outside the arc hitting 7 of 10 attempts for 21pts added to his 3 field goals and a perfect 6/6 from the free throw line for a game high 33. Jarrod Sheppard added 18 for the Rebels, but it was the Lightning bench that came through in the end with bonus points that got the Lightning over the line. Jesse Bell knocked down a trey with 6:14 left in the game for a Lightning 62-60 lead and they were never headed for the remainder of the game. Lightning hit 40% from the field to the Rebels 31% and only committed 14 turnovers to the Rebels 21.   

Ansett v Tracy Village Jets

Tracy Village Jets finished on top in their clash with Ansett, winning 78-73 after staging a second half revival that saw them roll over the Blues. Ansett held the upper hand in the first half, albeit a small one. Daniel Florance (24) and Jake Feeney (11pts & 11rebs) were the go to guys for the Blues in the first half as they took a slim 41-38 lead, but the Bombers turned things around in the second half, clamping down on the Blues shooters while filling up the hoop themselves as they grabbed the initiative. Jet Daniel Miller hit a two pointer with 4:30 left in the third quarter and the game turned into a see-saw rumble that put the Bombers up 59-57 with a quarter to go. Travis Thorne hit a trey with 9 minutes left in the game to give the Bombers the lead for good at 66-57. The Bombers outscored the Blues 41-32 in the second half and hit 43% from the field (29/68) to just 34% for the Blues (26/77). Travis Ellis led the Jets with 21pts 14rebs, Thorne 19, Miller 16 and Michael Maclean had 9 assists. New recruit for Ansett, John King, lent support with 12pts and 9 boards.

Razzle v Palmerston

Palmerston powered past Razzle 70-41 with Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson leading the way with an outstanding all round game. Hohipa-Wilson hit 27 points, grabbed 17 boards, made 11 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Palmo led 14-12 after one quarter, but pulled away steadily after that, holding the green and gold to just 29 points for the rest of the game while scoring 56. Aaron Simpson added 13pts 8rebs and Robert Wilson hit 10. James Panton led Razzle with 14 while team mate Mitch King had 10.
