League Women –Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

Tracy Village Jets rolled over Lightning 83-38 to hang on to their top spot on the DBA Challenge Season ladder. The Jets are still undefeated with a perfect 5-0 record and look like the team to beat with only the Uni Rebels and Ansett likely to cause an upset. The Bombers came out firing in this contest, flying out to a 25-13 lead after one quarter and then hammering home their dominance in the next two quarters when they outscored Lightning 34-14. Sam Rioli hit a season and game high 24 to lead four players in double figures for the Bombers. Tara Maxwell chipped in with 18, Georgii Howlett 16 and Kylie Duggan 11. Lucy Murray & Chelsea Cook had 12 each for the Lightning.

Eagles v Uni Rebels

Uni Rebels bounced back from last week’s loss to the Jets by downing the Eagles 76-58. The Rebels launched an all out three point attack at the Eagles that eventually proved to be the telling point in the game. The Rebels had jumped out to a 19-13 first quarter lead before the Eagles regrouped to reverse the score line in the second quarter to trail 34-32 at the half. A barrage of treys from the Rebels in the third quarter (5) turned the game in their favour as they outscored the Birds 27-12 to set up the win. For the record the Rebels hit 12 treys for 36pts (including 4 each from Jaylene Boundry and Tamara Sheppard). Top scorers for the Rebels were Sheppard (22.6ppg) with 26 and team mates Jaylene Bonson (20.2ppg) & Boundry who hit 20 and 12. Michelle Friel and Lillian Williams led the way for the Eagles with 19 & 11.

Warriors v Ansett

Ansett got up over the Warriors 60-42 behind a sharp shooting effort from Blues guard Lauren Flanegan. Flanegan dropped in six treys for a team and game high 18 points as she led Ansett to their third win of the season. The win put the Blues into third place. Ansett held a slim 12-9 first quarter lead that they added to in the second quarter with a 17-9 run for a 29-18 half time advantage. The Warriors lifted their game in the third quarter as Jennifer Kinsella hit 12 of her team high 13 during a 18-16 run that gave them some hope. Ansett stopped the Warrior scoring spree in the last quarter with some solid defense while they out pointed the Warriors 15-6 to claim the win. Victoria Uhlig also hit double figures for Ansett with 14.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

Another loss for the Uni Rebels, this time at the hands of Ansett 90-61 has put the defending champs well and truly on the bottom of the ladder. Matt Hunt (23), Jarrod Sheppard (22) and Tom Blake (20) combined for 65 points (51 in the first half) to blow the Rebels off the court. The Blues led 59-30 at half time. Captain Marcus Ch’ng led by example for the Rebels with 22 points followed by Jake Kirby with 17 and Simon Hamill with 12.

Tracy Village Jets v Warriors

The league leading Tracy Village Jets outplayed the Warriors 97-47 for their fifth straight win. The undefeated Bombers punched in 28 points to 11 in the first quarter and stretched their lead at every quarter, pounding home their control of the game in no uncertain terms. Travis Ellis (23.7ppg) led the way with a game high 28, Michael Maclean 21 and Liam MacLachlan 19. Phil Collins 19 and Ben Muvirimi 16 led the attack for the Warriors.

League MEN –Eagles v Lightning

Lightning created a minor upset of sorts when they disposed of the Eagles 76-62 for their second win of the season giving them a share of third place with the Eagles. Cameron Bailey played his best game of the season as he led the Lightning with a team high 19 followed by Ben Streeter with 17 and Brodie Hertel with 10. Bailey hit 14 of his total in the first half as Lightning powered out to a 41-19 first half lead that looked like a winner. Eagle Joseph Johnson lit up the scoreboard for 21 second half points and team mate Charles Benning hit 18 but the duo lacked support from the rest of the Eagles who left their run way too late to overcome the huge lead Lightning had set. Johnson finished with a game high 26 while Benning had 23. With the return of forward/centre Tom Leonard things should be looking up for Lightning for the rest of the season as his rebounding and point scoring will have a major impact on Lightning fortunes.
