Round Thirteen– Challenge Season

League WOMEN – Lightning v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels handed Lightning their worst defeat in a couple of seasons with a dominant 82-59 victory that staked their claim for the minor premiership and favouritism for the Challenge Season championship. Jaylene Bonson continued her good shooting form with a league and season high 39 points that boosted her league leading points per game average up to 26.1. Claire O’Bryan and Chelsea Cook had 24 and 16 for the Lightning but the support from the rest of the team fell short of the Rebels efforts. Bonson hit four consecutive shots in the first quarter to get the Rebels off and running and a second quarter 23-11 run that put them up 41-23 at half time was all they needed to keep their undefeated record intact. During the second quarter run Bonson hit 15pts in a row, much to her teams delight. Trish Graham and Michelle Friel also got into the act with contributions of 16 and 12 points respectively.

League Women – Eagles v Ansett

Ansett upset fourth placed Eagles 55-38 to claim their first win of the season. With only five players suited up for the second game in a row the Blues flew past their more fancied opponents with three players hitting double figures. Isabella Politis hit a career high 16 with Kate Smyth and Lauren Flanegan adding 11 each. Ansett stamped their intentions on the game in the first quarter when they put up 27 points to the Eagles 9 as everyone on the Ansett team scored. The Eagles played the Blues even after the first quarter, but the damage was done as they slumped to their second loss in a row.

Ladder:                   Uni Rebels 7-3-0, Tracy Village Jets 6-1-3, Lightning 4-3-4, Eagles 3-1-6 & Ansett 1-2-8

Next Week:                        Ansett v Tracy Village Jets 6:15pm, Uni Rebels v Eagles 7:45pm, Lightning-bye

League MEN –Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Eagles overpowered the Uni Rebels to reclaim a share of third place on the ladder with a 87-57 thrashing.    Joseph Johnson hit 9 of his game and team high 20 points in the first quarter as the Eagles set the tempo for the game with a 22-17 lead. Johnson continued to pop for the remainder of the game and was lent plenty of support from Timmy Duggan (14), Shane Harrison & Paul Buise (11 each). The turning point of the game was the second quarter when the Eagles out scored the Rebels 18-7 for a 40-24 half time lead, a lead they never relinquished. Jarrod Sheppard led the Rebels with 17 points before he left the game due to a disqualifying foul in the third quarter and Marcus Ch’ng & Kyle Webb added 13 each, but the loss of Sheppard put a dampener on any chance the Rebels might have had of overhauling the Eagles.

League Men – Lightning v Warriors

Lightning picked up their second win in a row with a cliff hanging 65-63 win against the Warriors. Evan Browne hit the last basket of the game to get Lightning only their second win of the season, but it gets them one game closer to the final four as they are now only one point behind the Warriors and two behind Razzle as all three teams vie for a playoff spot. Browne finished with a team high 20 for Lightning that was offset by his opposite number Jay Johnson from Warriors who also had 20. It was, however, the support cast that decided the outcome as Lightning had to hang on for dear life in the last quarter as the Warriors put in a spirited 19-9 run that almost got them across the line. Karsten Oltrop chipped in with 13 for the Lightning while Justin Costello (11), Rob Oliver & Emerson Neiva (10 each) put up double figures for the Warriors.

League Men – Ansett v Warriors

Ansett racked up some big numbers as they dismantled Razzle to the tune of 105-49. Cameron Parnham and Bryce Whitaker combined for 48 points (24 each) during the pounding with Nick Feeney and Tom Hunt adding 17 each. Razzle captain Ross Vasic hit 18 and Eric Klenke had 10 but the green and gold were no match for the Blues on the night. The lack of a big man in the middle will be the downfall of the Razzle unless they can find someone to fill the role. Ansett took a commanding 26-10 lead after one quarter and never looked back, finishing off the game with a dominant 39-6 last quarter run (Whitaker hitting 16).

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 10-1-0, Ansett 7-2-2, Eagles & Uni Rebels 5-2-4, Razzle 2-2-8, Warriors 2-2-7 & Lightning 2-1-8

Next Week:    Eagles v Lightning 6:15pm, Ansett v Warriors 7:45pm, Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels 9:15pm & Razzle-bye
