Seahawks and Mermaids - Round 18 Update

The Warrnambool Seahawks and Mermaids both put in a spirited display on the weekend but were unable to secure victory in the final game of the season. It was the Club’s Sponsors and Supporters night and it was pleasing to see two quality games of basketball on display.

The Seahawks took on the Southern Peninsula Sharks and put on an entertaining display of intense basketball. A late term injury to coach Tim Gainey made the task particularly difficult but in the end went down by three points with a 66 to 63 final score. The low score line indicates the defensive pressure of both sides with Southern Peninsula’s Manual Hendrix being the offensive standout with 27 points. Young guns Leigh Saffin and Damian Gray provided great energy and it was good to see emerging star Jeremy Bolden making an impact with limited court time.

The Mermaids took on the top of the table Werribee Devils who were on a nine-game winning streak. The teams knew each other well having played only three weeks ago with a dominant performance by the Devils. This time around, the young Mermaids outfit played possibly their best game of the season and fell short by only seven points with a 60 to 53 final score line. Best players in a very even performance included Nicola Handrick, Annie Blackburn and Maggie Baker.

A further highlight occurred with Tyler Rodgers sinking a basket from the centre court in the half-time shoot out and pocketing $250 for his effort.

Saturday 3rd of August is the Club’s presentation night and all are invited to celebrate the conclusion of another successful and enjoyable season.
