There may have been a drop in numbers this year, but the quality was there in a closely contested regatta. If you are ever considering competing at Cowes Week (UK), the Queenscliff Cup Regatta is definitely the place to learn sailing in tidal areas, as even the experienced locals had difficulty at times.
There was a good range of conditions, Race 1 being very light, Race 2 had the wind picking up with the sea breeze and Race 3 a moderate northerly, before backing to the northwest before the predicted WSW front of 35-40 knots. The final race, the Channels Race held over approximately 15 nautical miles in conjunction with Queenscliff Lonsdale YC, was a pleasant 12-14 knots.
Prior to the last Race, the overall point score was Boomaroo 8, Imagine 7 and Dream Catcher 7, with Sundance, John Barry's Davidson 40 having to retire after Race 2 with a mechanical fault. Ian Staley skippering his C & C 41 Dream Catcher clinched the Cup with a win in the Channels Race from Chris Laker in Imagine and Boomaroo 3rd place, sailed by Tom Hinton.
The QCYC Race Committee is indebted to Queenscliff Lonsdale Yacht Club for the loan of the redoubtable Start Boat "Swan" ably prepared by Tom Hinton and to QLYC Commodore Colin Gibbs for his competent handicap abilities, as well as QLYC Club Captain Steve Lee for timely advice and assistance with the Channels Race. Mack Dalton once again laid the buoy for the start lines - thanks Mack for a great job. Chris Laker also laid the 'Wedge Buoy' for Races 1,2 and 3. The Race Signal Flags were again supplied by RBYC Commodore Paul Pascoe, and the 'Swan' was crewed by Sam Davis, Frank McMahon and John Barry.
