It is with great sadness that Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club announces the passing of Peter Numa Joubert AM after a short illness. Peter was 90 Years old.
Peter learnt to sail in Sydney at about eight years of age and had been actively sailing well into his 80’s. Peter was a regular competitor in club races in his boats Billabong and Kingurra. His great passion was ocean racing taking on the Sydney to Hobart challenge 27 times including the treacherous 1998 being the last time he competed in the event. Peter designed the Currawong 31 Zeus, which won the Sydney to Hobart in 1981.
Peter was Professor of Engineering at Melbourne University and his research and advocacy lead to the introduction of the compulsory wearing of seatbelts in cars in Victoria. At the end of his distinguished teaching career he was appointed as the Emeritus Professor.
Peter was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1996 for services to road safety and ocean racing and in 2009 was awarded Member of the Order of Australia for service to engineering through research in the field of fluid dynamics, particularly in relation to submarine design and education.
Peter joined QCYC in 1973 and was an active member until his resignation (retirement from yachting) in 2011
The Club offers its condolences to Peter’s family and friends. Sail On Professor
