March PowerPlayer & Coach of the Month

The State Basketball League has announced the first PowerPlayer & Coach of the month for March. Each month thanks to PowerPlay sports the SBL awards a WSBL & MSBL player & coach a $50.00 PowerPlay Sports store voucher for being the PowerPlayer and Coach of the month.

The WSBL PowerPlayer of the month award goes to Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks star Brooke Hiddlestone. Hiddlestone had a very powerful start to the season, leading her team to a 3-2 record during March. Hiddlestone averaged 25.2 points and 13.4 rebounds while shooting an incredible 60% for the month. Hiddlestone continues to lead her team from the front with her team now sitting in 5th spot on the ladder with a 5-2 record.

Other players who were in consideration were Natalie Young (Lakeside Lightning), Kaye Tucker (Rockingham Flames), Ashley Gilmore (Willetton Tigers) and Lynx star Deanna Smith (Perry Lakes Hawks).

The MSBL PowerPlayer of the month award was given to Luke Meyer from the Dominos Geraldton Buccaneers. Meyer has proven to be a superstar in the league with his averages of 34.6 points, 12.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists in his three outings (first game no stats are available). Even more amazingly Meyer shot at 71.1% from the floor and 50% from outside for the month as his team went undefeated 4-0 for March.

Other players in consideration for the award were Bryce Birch (Cockburn Cougars), Thomas Garlepp (Perry Lakes Hawks), Stephen Weigh (East Perth Eagles), Jeff Dowdell (Wanneroo Wolves), Carmie Olowoyo (Stirling Senators), Ryan Neill (Perth Redbacks) and Adrian Majstravich (Kalamunda Eastern Suns).

The WSBL Coach of the Month went to SBL personality Glenn Ellis who led his new team the Perry Lakes Hawks to a perfect 3-0/top of the table start to the season. His Hawks had an average winning margin of 31.3 points as they swept aside last years grand finalists, Willetton Tigers, Cockburn Cougars and Wanneroo Wolves with ease. Ellis truly has his team firing on all cylinders. Above the Rim co-hosts CJ Jackson (SBL GM) & Phil Doherty have even gone out on a limb predicting the Hawks will not lose more than three games all season!

The MSBL Coach of the Month went to former SBL GM Greg Gurr at his new home in Cougar land. The super coach put his team on top of the ladder at 4-0 with an average winning margin of 31.25 points per game. His team has convincingly beaten the Stirling Senators, perennial powerhouse Perry Lakes Hawks, 2008 Grand Finalists Willetton Tigers and the Perth Redbacks. With just one import and a mostly home bred team the coach has again proved his ability to get the best out of him players. With his team now at 5-0 and rumours of more talent to come, most are calling them the early favourites for the Championship.

Other coaches in the running for the Womens Award were first year coach Ryan Petrik (Rockingham Flames), Robert Butt (Kalamunda Eastern Suns) and Glenn Clarke (Willetton Tigers). In the Mens competition first year coaches Ray Evans (Geraldton Buccaneers) & Adam Caporn (East Perth Eagles) as well as Andy Stewart (Lakeside Lightning), Steve Charlton (Goldfields Giants) and Dion Dagostino (Perry Lakes Hawks) were all in the running.
