Petro back to winning; Mahram roll over Shahrekurd

Strong contenders Petro Chimi returned to their winning ways handing down a 76-69 defeat to Caspian Qazvin and twice defending champions Mahram didn’t raise much sweat in rolling past HB Shahrekurd in Round 15 action of the Iranian Super League on Thursday.

In other action, Tarabari Qom had an 80-70 win over Shahrdari Gorgan and BA Shiraz scored a hard-fought 78-76 win against Saman Bank.

Mahram persisted with Senegalese Cheikh Samb and American Chris Williams as their imports on court and both of them returned significant contributions in the win.

Samb (red jersey in pic above) scored an impressive 7/10 in field attempts for his 16 points and also had 6 rebounds. Williams fired in all his attempts on the paint for 11 points and had 5 assists and 2 steals along with 2 rebounds.

Regular starter Mahdi Kamrani was rested for the entire game and another regular Javad Davari played just over 20 minutes, probably keeping in mind the WABA League semifinals series against Al Riyadi Beirut starting on Monday.

Mehrad Atashi grabbed the opportunity of the extra court time in the more famous teammates’ absence and had 13 points.

Omid Dehganian had a game-high 22 points and the only double double of the game with 10 rebounds, both in vain.

Dwayne Shackleford accounted for 16 points.

Tarabari Qom, who stretched to Mahram to Overtime in their previous outing, began solidly racing ahead 24-18 in the first quarter and then consolidated for their win.

Waitari Marsh, who led his team’s scoring in that loss to Mahram, continued his contribution for Qom with 21 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and as many steals.

Frenchman Claude Marquis had a double double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Mohsen Khosvari had 16 points and 6 rebounds.

Gorgan’s imports Ian Young and Sasha Cuic continued to play significantly, but there was very little support from the local talent.

Trinidadian Young had a game-high 24 points, while Serbian Cuic had 9 rebounds to go with his 18 points.

Hadi Dehghan was the highest scoring Iranian with 13 points, but the rest of the team combined to score a mere 15 points.
