The time has finally come for the changing of the guard after more than twenty years of service of the Tigers.
The Mayne Tigers are saying farewell for now to Leo Dennis as he makes the shift to colder climes to enjoy time with his family and do some of the things he likes to do on a rural property in Northern Tasmania.
Leo has been an integral part of the Black and Gold since he and son Mark joined the junior club in the 1990’s. The club has been very fortunate to have such a loyal and capable person involved through a period which could have seen it consigned to history but for people like him.
In his time at the Mayne Juniors he served on the committee in many roles and also provided management for numerous teams during Mark’s junior development. When it came time for Mark to progress to the senior ranks Leo stepped up to the plate once again to be the Senior Team Manager but also once again serve on a small but passionate Senior Committee to help steer the club.
Leo often recalls this period, albeit difficult, as one of great pleasure with the many relationships he made with so many other passionate and committed volunteers in footy across South East Queensland.
Club President Russell Ditchburn recalls that for many years it didn’t matter where you went in footy you would always be asked “Is Leo coming today ……. and how is he going?” so much is he respected as a person in the footy community.
In more recent times Leo has been the go to man when it comes to ground management at the Club with meagre funds to stretch across a season of footy no matter what the weather or conditions. He likes nothing more than a passionate discussion with his club mates about the amount of water and the type of grass needed or to chase up a sponsor for linemarking paint with the ultimate goal of how can we best get the job done.
Of course the best part is to sit and watch the Tigers run around and win a game or two. It was very fitting that he has been able to enjoy the fruits of his hard work over many years lead to the success of recent seasons.
He has fostered a new team of club management and groundsman at the club and can happily make his next move.
The Mayne Tigers salute you Leo Dennis and wish you well in your new state and look forward to hearing about some Tasmanian Tigers in due course.
