Latham is lights out as he lights up Brissie

In the last game of the WheelKings season, Bill Latham had a career day as he recorded his highest ever NWBL score and set a league high for all players in 2008. Brisbane had no answer for Bill as he repeatedly forced his way into the key - often using the excellent seals from guards Tina McKenzie and Jeremy Doyle - and was fed sweet passes from his teammates, four of whom put 5 or more assists his way. When that wasn't happening and the shot clock was running down, he'd simply shoot from range with astounding accuracy.

Bill had 15 points in the first quarter, 16 in the second and 12 in the third. Just when you thought his shooting arm must be about to fall off, he came out and made 10 from 10 in the final quarter to cap a stunning display! Wenty pretty much jumped on Bill's back and rode him to a 102-51 win.

Most of the WheelKings put up some solid numbers with Liesl Tesch in particular displaying nice form heading towards her Gliders captain's role in Beijing. She had 12 points at 56%, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and a block in an all-round quality performance. Craig Cannane netted a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards, and Gliders point guard Kylie Gauci controlled the ball very well in the open court and distributed 9 assists. Shannon Dallas and Jonathon Simon were also instrumental in getting the ball inside to Latham as they racked up a combined 10 assists.

For the Brisbane Spinning Bullets it was nice to see their captain Adrian King have a good shooting game as he prepares for a critical role with the Rollers in Beijing. He had 19 points at a 47% conversion rate which is impressive when most of his shots were from 15 feet or more. Adam Bates chipped in 9 points and 9 rebounds but the rest of the Spinning Bullets really had a forgettable day.

WheelKings coach Gerry Hewson lamented after the game that "this was the season that wasn't." Everyone was left wondering what this team could have done if there was, as in past years, a commitment to training, preparation and attendance at games at all costs. Injuries didn't help, but no-one could hide their disappointment that it was such a great team on paper ... but of course everyone knows games aren't won on paper. So, with everyone healthy next year, and no Paralympics or World Championships to distract, it remains to be seen if the Wenty of old can make a comeback and grab a finals berth.
