The Wildcats had their home opener in Round 3 hosting the Central Blues Men's and Women's team. It was a great day for footy with perfect weather. There was lots going on at Mohawk Park with 2 games, a food drive and a BBQ. Thank you to everyone who came and brought canned goods for our Neighbour 2 Neighbour food drive.
The Men's game kicked off at 12 noon. In the first quarter, the Wildcats had a great start to the game taking an early lead, but the Blues came back strong in the 2nd quarter. The game was a back and forth battle with numerous lead changes. The Wildcats were leading 64-61 right at the end of the game but a 50m penalty was called right at full time in favour of the Blues. With no time left in the game, the Blues were given a shot on goal right at the goaline. The Blues easily kicked it through to win the game. Final score was 9.10.64 to 9.13.67. With such a close game, it was disappointing for the game to be determined on a play like this, but the men gave everything they had in this game. Goals were scored by "Digits" with 3, "Bing 2.0" with 2, Matt with 2 and Luke Main and Justin with 1 apiece. Their record is now 1 win and 2 losses after Round 3. Best on Ground was awarded to Josh Patkeau and the Hard Hat was given to "Digits".
The Women's game started at 2 pm. With a slightly depleted line-up due to a combination of injuries and availability, the women were still able to pull out a win. Despite giving up 2 quick goals, the women were able to make some adjustments and gain control of the game. After gaining the lead, the Wildcats had to hold on tight to the end as key player Jackie had to exit the game in the 4th quarter leaving the Wildcats with no subs. Shortly after Danielle tweaked a hamstring and was limping around, unable to get a change due to low numbers. Despite these challenges, the Wildcats were able to grind it out to the end. Goals were scored by Jackie and Lia with 3 each, and 1 by Emilie. Final score was 7.8.50 to 5.7.37.
Best on Ground was awarded to 3rd year player Lisa Muldoon who had her best ever game for the Wildcats taking key marks in the back line. The Hard Hat was awarded to rookie Emilie who went hard for ever contest in her first game of footy.
Next up for the Club in Round 4, the Men travel to University of Toronto, Scarborough Campus to take on the reigning premiers the Broadview Hawks at 11 am. They look to improve on their record of 1 win and 2 losses. The women will enjoy a week off with a bye. They are currently 2nd on the ladder behind the Etobicoke Roos, separated only by percentage as both teams are undefeated with 2 wins apiece.
