Vaqueros win BSN championship:


BAYAMON - Vaqueros de Bayamón won the BSN championship after beating Piratas de Quebradillas 84-82. Bayamon won the finals in six games (4-2).

Quebradillas led most of the game, but Vaqueros reacted at the end of the third quarter and at the start of the final period to make an 11-2 run that closed the game 71-67 with 8:01 left. The bench was key in the rally and the starters entered at the middle of the quarter, led by Carmelo Lee with three baskets from long range, to give them an 80-79 lead with 2:02.

After a tie at 82, Daniel Santiago made a free throw and Javier Mojica another with 11.1 to leave the score 84-82.

In the final quarter David Huertas missed a three pointer and Vaqueros recovered to celebrate their fourteenth title and their first since 1996.

Christian Dalmau was the MVP of the series as he netted 12 points. In the finals he averaged 15.5 points per game.

Carmelo Antrone Lee led with 17 points, 9 of them in the final quarter and Olumide Oyedeji had 14.

In the loss Peter John Ramos had 24 points and Joel Jones Camacho 21.

Piratas started the game with a 7-0 run but Vaqueros tied it with a 7-0 rally. The first ten minutes finished 23-22 in favor of Piratas.

The offense by Peter John Ramos, Shawn Redhage and Joel Jones kept Piratas with the lead in the second quarter, finishing up 44-39. Jones had 13 points and Ramos 12 at the half. Oyedeji netted 10 for Vaqueros.

Quebradillas kept their intensity during the third quarter with long range baskets and penetrations. A basket by Redhage gave them a 69-56 lead with 15 seconds but Guayacan Santiago made a three pointer to leave the score 69-59 and start the 11-2 run.

Julio Toro won his twelfth title as a coach and Orlando "Guayacán" Santiago his seventh as a player (6 with Santurce).
