JOINVILLE - Capitanes de Arecibo and host Ciser/Araldite/Univille won at the start of the International Tournament played at Joinville from January 16-18. This tournament serves as preparation for Liga Nacional in Brazil while Arecibo prepares for Baloncesto Superior Nacional of Puerto Rico.
In the first game Capitanes de Arecibo defeated Minas Tenis Clube 82-65. The series between them is currently 2-1 as Arecibo won on the FIBA Americas League 95-81 and in Amsterdam Minas defeated the Puerto Rican team 69-66. Minas entered the Final Four of the FIBA Americas League by winning Group A by goal average.
Arecibo lost the first quarter 15-6 but recovered in the second quarter to finish the first half down 35-30. In the third quarter Arecibo continued to cut the lead and after 30 minutes the score was tied at 57.
In the final quarter Arecibo took control of the game after three pointers by Eddin Santiago, Wilfredo Pagán and Ángel "Buster" Figueroa and dominated that segment 25-8 to finish up 82-65.
Buster Figueroa led Arecibo with 27 points while David Cortes made 24 from the bench. Wilfredo Pagan netted 9 points and center Jeff Aubry scored 8 points while grabbing 12 rebounds.
Minas was led by former national team player Ricardo Probst who scored 21 points and Luiz Felipe had 9.
Arecibo was without Eric Rodriguez after releasing him prior to the trip while Minas missed their import guard Facundo Luis Sucatzky.
In the second game of day 1 Ciser/Araldite/Univille defeated Bauru 79-72 in overtime. Regulation finished tied at 66.
