Melchester Rovers Junior Soccer Club
We are a soccer club located in Dunedin, New Zealand. Our junior members range from ages 4 to 14.
We also have a link with the Melchester senior club for our adult members. Our senior team is called the Melchester Rovers Association Football Club. Our senior club consists of a few teenagers, some in their 20s and early 30s, but most of our senior members are over 35 and are parents of the kids in our Junior Club.
Our 11th to 16th Grades have the opportunity to represent our club in Otago Representative matches and tournaments as well as further opportunities to represent Footballsouth. Opportunities also exist to gain selection for the South Island and New Zealand age group Futsal (5-a-side indoor soccer) teams.
Our club was initially established in 2002 and has evolved into a large well established club over the years.
At Melchester we crater for players of al ages and abilities. Starting with the very young who can enjoy the fun of football while learning the skills that they will carry with them into their later years. The academy offers an all-weather playing opportunity as it is played indoor at the Tahuna Intermediate School hall, so regardless of the weather a fun Saturday morning can be had. As the kids progress up and grades our teams move into the FootballSouth program. The 6th to 8th grades enjoy the round robin tournament played at the oval, playing 5 a side for 20mins each way, in what is officially a non-competitive grade, e.g. we aren’t meant to keep score, but the kids always now the score. After the 8th grade things really pick up as the teams get larger, the pitches also get larger and skills leant in those early years are put to the test. As the years progress players are presented with other football opportunities, including selection for local and national teams, something that Melchester has excelled at over years, having had many players regularly selected for local and national teams.
We try to put all our coaches through the Small Whites Introductory Coaching Course as part of their assessment to become "Coach Educators". This will allow us to run Junior Coaching Courses for NZ Football and Soccersouth. As the coaches and managers volunteer their time, we try to reward this of offering the best training possible, linking in with coaching and training courses offered by FootballSouth. any costs are covered by the club.
Committee Members and Volunteers
We are very fortunate to have volunteers for our club providing help for such things as committee members, coaching, managing teams, fundraising, helping with the BBQ, setting out and taking in goals on Saturdays and to help coaches with training sessions. If you are interested in helping our club in any aspect, we would love to hear from you. The Club Committee is also open to any suggestions that might assist the club and its members.
The Dunedin City Council continues to maintain our Marlow Park Clubrooms, which we are very grateful for. The clubrooms are situated at the end of Kettle Park Road.
