Waking the Sleeping Giant

Claudelands Rovers Announce Head Coaches for 2017

Claudelands Rovers Football Club is aiming for strong push in all facets of Football growth and pathways in 2017. As the club moves towards its centenary in 2023 it has secured prominent appointments at all levels of football development to guide the way.

Leading the charge are Head coaches of the Men’s and Ladies first teams, Rodi Rojas and Dave Hayes respectively.

L-R Richard Harris, Jimmy Keaney, Warrick Gibson, Rodi Rojas, Warren Jones, Dave Hayes

Men’s Football at Rovers has been the poorer cousin to the Ladies echelon for the past decade where the ladies have been a Premier team regionally and nationally, winning numerous titles including the 2015 Northern League Premier Womens title for the second time in five years. It’s now time to even the playing field.

Rojas became part of the Rovers coaching group in 2016 alongside Richard Harris, coaching the Men’s First team competing in the AFF Northern League Division 2. Having survived the season, a new outlook was required to assess the direction of the mens team and a new strategy developed to push for success. Rojas has signed on for another two years and has gathered together a strong team of staff to realise his goals ahead of 2017, including coaches Jeff Tozer, Warrick Gibson, Richard Harris, and Jimmy Keaney. The men’s first and second teams have already begun a pre-season conditioning program ahead of next season - though spaces are still available. No stone will be left unturned to achieve their goals.

The newest appointment to the coaching environment comes in the form of Dave Hayes. Hayes has numerous years of experience coaching WaiBOP FTC programs, Northern League, Youth level and holds NZ Coaching preliminary badge. He also has a daughter in the NZ U20 squad and a son playing for Hamilton Wanderers in the National League. Hayes has hopes of inspiring a continuing number of highly talented players through the Club. With a number of New Zealand National League, International and upcoming talented players returning to football for 2017 he has the basis for another title winning squad.

Jointly both Hayes and Rojas will look to share expertise throughout the season as well in other aspects of coaching with Rojas sitting on the committee as Coaching Co-ordinator, alongside club stalwart Andrew Hansen.

The aim is very clear - to produce a hotbed for both Men’s and Women’s elite teams. The process builds on a connected club vision, starting at youth level and building close relationships with the local community and school network. Geographically Claudelands Rovers is ideally positioned at the epicentre of a large pool of school networks and leveraging this aspect through club support into schools will be a big focus. Finally to complete a pathway for youth through to Northern League a Youth Talent Centre in conjunction with Rojas is being established. The pathway is based on the successful direction he inspired for his own son Marco. Marco is currently a premier All White and has a full-time professional contract with Australian A League Club, Melbourne Victory.

Any players wishing to join Claudelands Rovers in 2017 can make contact via

  • email (enquiries@rovers.org.nz),

Rovers Ladies take on Papa New Guinea!

With the Womens NZU-20 World Cup knocking on our door, a wider group of players were selected in an NZ Women’s development squad to take on Papa New Guinea (PNG) U-20’s last night (02/11/2016) at McClennan Park in Papakura. The Development squad consisted of U-17 and U-20 aged players.

Four Claudelands Rovers women were selected to play in the Development squad including Serena Murrihy, Eileish Hayes, Sarah Krystman and Michaela Foster. All four ladies were named in the starting squad with Foster captaining the side.

According to Murrihy, the game was a hard fought battle between the two sides with only 3 goals scored in the match. NZ went up 1-nil before the break and held onto the lead until shortly into the second half where PNG put one in the back of the net from a counter attack. A second goal thanks to a classy strike from 25 yards out by Krystman put NZ back in the lead. The game finished 2-1 to NZ, though plenty more goals could have been scored.

The NZ Development side take on PNG again on Saturday 5th November 7pm at McClennan Park, Papakura.

The NZ U-20 play Mexico on Thursday 3rd November at 1pm at QBE Stadium, Albany and again Sunday 6th November at 3.30pm also at QBE Stadium, Albany.

NZF Quality Club Mark

To help NZ clubs perform at their peak, NZ Football have created the Quality Club Mark. This is a national partnership with the seven federations as well as 17 Regional Sports Trusts.  It aims to promote continuous improvement in the way football is delivered and support clubs as they adopt standards of best practice.

The Quality Club Mark assesses a number of factors on and off the field to provide a clear view of the standards acheived. Following the introduction of the NZF Whole of Football Plan (http://www.nzfootball.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Whole-of-Football-Plan-Updated.pdf), Rovers now have an opportunity to deliver high-quality football programmes to players and volunteers. This transparent, systematic approach will ensure that the football community can identify those clubs that are well run and promote a positive environment, where someone can safely enjoy the activities and facilities offered.

Throughout the season, Rovers have been completing the requirements for the Quality Club Mark as requested by NZF, WaiBOP and AFF (as part of the Lotto NRFL requirements) and are well on our way to achieving Level One by the end of the year.

With this improvement to our club, a number of new roles will require filling at the clubs AGM on November 10th at 7.30pm.  Advertising will be available shortly, and we strongly encourage everyone to come along and have your say!

Positive feedback fantastic for club

Positive feedback from opposition teams is always pleasing to see and what awesome feedback received from Northern United:

"The 13th grade Argyle went down 1-0 in their plate final  Unfortunately despite having superior possession and by a long way the most shots on goal, they just couldn't get it past the Claudelands keeper who was outstanding and pulled off some amazing saves.  Credit to Claudelands who were dangerous but we restricted them to only a handful of shots all game...."

Awesome work by Jono Benge (keeper referred to above) working with Tony Rennell on tuedsay nights at goalkeeper training - it has definitely paid off. Well Done!

Pirates make the News

Over the weekend, the Claudelands Rovers 12th Grade Pirates travelled to Te Aroha to play the Te Aroha Cobras in a tightly contested match.  The Pirates unfortunatley going down 2-1.
