Former Hay Magpie juniors, Levi Freeman-Quay, Zac Redfern and Solo Alone have been in the Rugby League news in recent weeks.
Freeman-Quay is currently touring France/England with the Australian Universities Rugby League team, and was named ‘best on ground’ in the team’s win over France in the First Test last week.
Levi left Hay as a fullback/winger but played in the Test match win over France as a second rower.
He was a student at Hay War Memorial High School and lived at Claughton Hostel for most of his time in the town.
He came up through the Junior Rugby League ranks and played in the crack Magpies Under 16 team alongside some of current Magpies stars - Shayne Kennedy, Simon Parr, Jesse Thomson,Tuck McLean and Travis Payne - when the Club was involved in the Goulburn-Murray Border Rugby League competition in 2005/2006.
Levi was identified as a talent by the Canberra Raiders and signed to a scholarship to further his Rugby League career at Erindale College. He moved into the Raiders elite group and became a member of the champion Raiders Toyota Cup(Under 20) premiership team in 2008.
The team that contained current Raiders NRL stars Josh Dugan, Daniel Vidot, Joel Thompson, Shaun Fensom, Drury Lowe, Jarrod Croker, Joe Picker Travis Waddell, Nick Skinner and Todd Rheinberger.
Levi, who was too old for the Toyota Cup in 2009 season linked up with Western Suburbs and played in the strong NSW Cup competition.
Zac Redfern has gained selection in the Australian Army (known as Thunder) Rugby League team as a half back.
The Thunder will play in a week-long Combined Australian Rugby League Services Tournament – a round robin featuring teams from Navy and Air Force in March 2011 in Sydney.
The Australian Combined Services team will be selected at announced at the completion of that tournament.
Zac was named as one of the Thunder’s best players in the team’s 22-16 victory over Palm Island recently.
The match report said "Halfback (Gnr) Zac Redfern, (4 Fd Regt) led the team around the park very well"
Meanwhile another former Magpie, Solo Alone, has been signed to play with the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs in the 2011 season.
Solo, who turned 18 in August, has been with Penrith Panthers for the past couple of seasons playing in the Harold Matthews (Under 16) and SG Ball(Under 18) Shield competitions.
He was named the Panthers "Most improved" in the 2008 Harold Matthews squad.
Solo told me he is enjoying the switch to the Bulldogs.
"I have been training strongly, and I am looking forward to having a big year in 2011 with the Dogs.
"The Dogs have a good squad and I have set my goal to make the Toyota Cup team".
