Bears Win Four From Four
The North Tamworth Bears played a home game against West Tamworth on Saturday for Round 1 of the 2014 Season. We had a great start to the season with all four grades coming away with a win.
U18's played their first game as a team this year having not played in any trials leading up to the season. The team is primarily made up of many of last years Premiership winning U16's players who have returned to the Bears for another season. Coach, Matt Walsh, says he is happy with the win considering the limited group training sessions due to school holidays.
Angus MacTavish was voted Players Player with a very high work rate in both attack and defence. Brodie Orr had an outstanding game in the centres and was well supported by Matt Thompson at fullback. The final score when the whistle blew was 42 - 8. It is unsure whether the boys will get a run against Diggers U18's in Round 2. Diggers U18s have not formally pulled out of the competition, however, had to forfeit this weeks game against Gunnedah due to lack of numbers.
Ladies League Tag had a convincing 62 - 0 win against West/Quirindi. The girls had no subs on the bench at the start of the game but as kids were dropped off to Daddy Day Care and jersey's were donned on the side of the field they ended up at full strength. The last minute rush around had no effect on the end result and the girls broke through Wests defence time and time again. Gerogia Rumsby sealed the deal scoring the final try for the game placing it neatly underneath the goal post allowing for succesful conversion.
Our Reserve Grade team this year is made up of mixture of last years Premiership winning side and some fresh blood. They were looking a little worse for wear in the first half of the game against West/Quirindi and the crowd thought they had us beat. Coach, Ben Browning, gave a half time talk in regards to maintaining structure and completing sets. Following the break the boys came back fighting and won the second half 42 - 0. Nick O'Leary had a great game in the second row as did Captain/Coach, Ben Browning and livewire fullback AJ Burns. The boys ended up with a 48 - 22 win.
The final game of the day saw the crowds roll in. First Grade took the field in what is always a passionate game when facing West. Norths managed to maintain their winning streak backing up the win we had against Wests in the Easter Knockout. Nick Dobson had a cracker of a game at lock and Callum Hayne was voted Players Player with consistent outstanding performance.
Tries were scored by Callum Hayne, Brad Marshall, Zac Russ, Abel Carney, Jake Cocking, Brock Wadwell, Shane Wadwell, and James Cooper. The final score was 48-18.
Some big scores were also put on the board across Group 4 as a whole this weekend. Narrabri got up over Wee Waa 68-16 and Gunnedah had a win against Diggers 88-30. Bears will take on Oxley Diggers next weekend however the venue is to be confirmed.
