MFC hold firm and build on their lead at the top

Peatie and Jaiden

After last week's thrilling and gutsy comeback to draw 2-2 with Burleigh Heads with goals from Jordy Campbell and Justin Tannock, deep into injury time, Murwillumbah were looking to get back to winning ways in their match of the round fixture with Merrimac on Sunday. It was normal service resumed with MFC coming out on top 4-2 but not after Merrimac made the top of the league MFC side work hard. The league's leading goal scorer Luke Morely got MFC off to the perfect start with a clinical finish from Troy Ruthven's perfectly weighted ball over the top of the Merrimac defence. In a somewhat scrappy first half this is how the score ended before the HT break. More goals were to come in the second half but it was not all one way traffic. New signing, Jordy Campbell, coolly slotted in his first goal of the afternoon after excellent work once again from Ruthven and Morley but Merrimac soon bounced back to 2-1 after some indecision at the back post from Murwillumbah. Jordy Campbell made the scoreline comfortable once again after a very unselfish square ball from strike partner Morley meant Jordy could pass into an empty net. Teamwork at its finest! As Merrimac pushed up to try and get back into the game Bryce Tory came off the bench to put the game beyond doubt with low shot from just inside the box to make it 4-1. Merrimac made the scoreline a little more respectable with a late consolation goal from a free kick to finish 4-2.

Unfortunately at the end of the game MFC received a major double blow with the news that Jordy Campbell actually broke his leg in a challenge late in the game and that Keanu Sparkes-Young MRI scan results had come through with the verdict that he would miss the rest of the season with cruciate ligament damage to his knee. We wish these two very important players a very speedy recovery.

This Murwillumbah team just keeps delivering the goods and getting the results. They go about their business quietly and very effectively and it has absolutely stunned the rest of the Gold Coast Premier League who would have expected this Murwillumbah team to finish closer to the bottom than anywhere near the top. It is a great credit to Dave Lonie and Dean Milosevic for the work they have done with this squad.
