Muswellbrook Cats U13's took on the Maitland Saints last Sunday at Weeraman oval. Conditions where tough again with strong down field winds making football difficult for both sides. The game had great passages of play with defence and attack on the ball especially from young cat Riley Saddler who put in a great effort to get possession of the ball and position himself on the field and deserved one of the Cats best for the game. Also amongst Cats outstanding was Ellynor Vuloaloa picking up one of Cats best for the day with great backline skills putting her body on the line with confidence growing each week will be handy for the young Cats future. The Saints had a comfortable lead by half time due to their strong centre line attack. The second half started off strong for the Cats as they held the Saints to an even battle. The last Quarter seen the Saints kick away with a convincing win over the young Cats. Coach Steve Mullane had praise for the whole team’s effort and said it was the team’s best game they have played all year. Also impressive was young Will Hateley with great marks and fast handballs out of the backline made it good footy to watch. U13's Cats next game is against Newcastle on Sunday.
The end of 2015 football is almost upon us. This year’s season has taken its toll on our U15 Blue team losing many players to injury with this week’s game was no exception. Riley Warner and Toby Davis were out along with Josh Page, Jesse Schumaker and Zach Howarth. Our Blue team started the game well putting points on the board quickly and taking the lead. Will Cannon stepped in for Toby as ruck for today’s game with Shaun Wilkins taking his place in the backline. Our midfielders Ky McGrath, Corey Harris and Sam Heaton worked their hearts out as always moving the ball freely up the field. Second half saw our team running out of puff with Wallsend coming back strongly. Our defensive line in Oscar Bates, Connor Saddler and Kaylub Howe fought hard to keep the opposition out but the Swan were too strong defeating our Under 15’s Muswellbrook Blues. Coach’s comment:
It was a great effort by the boys when we were missing some established stars. Will Cannon took on the ruck duties and with support of Oscar Bates covered the loss of Toby Davis admirably. Shaun Wilkins played full back for a half and showed the kind of determination our backline is famous for. It was another big day for the midfield runners who gave it their all.
The U15 white’s unfortunately were not strong enough for a determined Nelson Bay side. They are still in finals contention only one win off being in the top 4.
The U17’s have strengthened their top 4 spot with a great win over Lake Macquarie/ Wallsend.
The Cats had a win as the Magpies forfeited. Although disappointing as the cats are always keen for a game it does man a win for the Cats keeping them in the finals race.
