Biography - Group Captain Ross Jones, CSM

Group Captain Ross Jones joined the Royal Australian Air Force at Brisbane in May 1990 as a Supply Officer (now Logistic Officer) through the Air Force Undergraduate Scheme and graduated from Griffith University at the end of 1991 with a Bachelor of Commerce. He held various positions as a junior Logistics Officer in areas such as stock control, warehousing, air terminal operations, vehicle fleet management and Defence Force recruiting.

On promotion to Squadron Leader in 2001 he was posted to Aerospace Systems Division within the Defence Materiel Organisation and was responsible for materiel preparedness planning for aerospace systems. In 2003 he completed the Australian Technical Staff Officer Course and on graduation was awarded a Masters in Management Studies from the University of NSW. This was followed by a posting to Strike Reconnaissance System Program Office in 2004 as the senior logistician for the SPO.

In 2006 Group Captain Jones was posted to 382 Expeditionary Combat Support Squadron as the logistics planner and in May of that year he deployed to the Middle East for six months as the Detachment Commander of the Combat Support Unit supporting the C-130 operations.

On return to Australia he was selected for the Australian Command and Staff Course and on graduation at the end of 2007 was promoted to Wing Commander. This was followed by a posting to Capability Development Group as part of the team that supported the development of the Defence White Paper.

Group Captain Jones was then appointed as the Commanding Officer of No 1 Recruit Training Unit in January 2009 and his three years of service in that role was recognized on the 2013 Australia Day Honours List through the awarding of a Conspicuous Service Medal. He was then posted to Logistics Branch within Air Force Head Quarters in January 2012 as the Logistics Sponsor for the Air Force logistics trades.

In January 2013 Group Captain Jones was promoted to his current rank and was posted back to Aerospace Systems Division as the Director of Logistics.

In January 2014 Group Captain Jones took up his current appointment of Commandant of the Royal Australian Air Force College.

Group Captain Jones is married to Janmaree and they are owned by two dogs and two cats. His interests include motorcycling, following and supporting numerous forms of sport, trying to stay fit, reading and spending quality time with his family and good friends.
