Update 2 for AFL Masters Townsville. We intend to have an update email every 2-3 weeks. If you would like to know any more please contact the club key contacts, seek from our Facebook or website.
Big thank you to the committee and supporters that have been working hard behind the scenes, in particular after the severe weather event we experienced early this year.
Regardless of situation we were able to have several training sessions and we played our first game in Cairns 09 Mar 19. We only had a few able to travel up; however, we were able to attract some more players through a previous contact, now based in Cairns, big thank you to Scott O’Donnell for the extra communication to seek the additional players for the game. Another big thank you for the Cairns President Adam Ewart as we worked together to make the day happen. The end result we had a great game, in the appropriate spirit, that only had a few points difference at the end. Special mention to Chris and Julie Mohrwinkel, Rod and Tracey Drew, Noelene James, Mark Hurley, Paul Lightbound and Steven McLeod. After the game it was great to see everyone stay around and continue the networking within the Masters from both teams. This was a great day and evening with many good discussions between Cairns and Townsville players old and new.
We are working with Cairns, Charters Towers and Airlie Beach to confirm further games for this year. Next games are:
- Airlie Beach Carnival 19-20 Apr 19
- Townsville Carnival 05 May 19 on the long weekend.
We welcome Dean Anderson to the Coaching group that will provide some new ideas and drills. The coaching group is Dean Anderson and Andy Pethybridge. If you would like to assist please let us know as we would like to grow this capability further to ensure we have flexibility for the club over the duration of the year.
Training remains on the RMS oval (next to the Neil French our usual oval) on Sundays, until advertise otherwise. Please be at the ground by 0945 for a 1000 start.
The team manager group is led by Peter Goodwin with Chris Mohrwinkel and Steve McLeod. Please let them know if you can assist. Well done to Steve McLeod in joining the committee.
Sponsorship, we have Nev Growden leading this program. This year we have already confirmed our Major Sponsor and have several expected to confirm, likely within the next few weeks that have been long time supporters of the club. Great work from Nev and if you can assist Nev or provide any new sponsors, please let Nev know, as many hands make light work. A recent donation of water bottles was from “Life Without Barriers”, much appreciated. If you know of anyone that could provide a few more it would be great for the club.
Registrar group is Rod Drew with Jonny Freeman and Anne Growden providing assistance as needed. If you have any questions with registration please contact Rod. We are linking the registration costs into the registration process. If financial questions are raised please talk to Anne Growden our Treasurer. We would like to make the registration fee payment process as simple and pain free as possible; therefore, please rectify at your earliest convenience and keep our Treasurer informed as this will assist everyone.
Club equipment, we have 10 new footballs badged with the AFL Masters Townsville Carnival details and we will commence a notice board communication strategy. This will be a portable white board and used for players/supporters to read for key topics. This will be located outside of our usual change rooms and after training in the area we hydrate and support Julie program of fundraising for our nominated cause, the EJ Whitten Foundation.
Flood damage from the recent Northern Monsoon event, has our grant/claim in the final stages and expected to be submitted in the near future to assist the club with replacement of damaged stock and equipment. Big thank you to Anne and Julie for the work to complete this last task for the grant/claim, as we attached costings against our equipment.
We have just had invoices for our mandated club fees and insurance from AFL Masters Queensland. Please consider the payment of our club registration fees early so we can more towards other tasks. The fees are quite low in comparison to other clubs and go towards insurance, governance and general club running costs. Player is $75 and social member is $20.
As this is our club we would like to hear from you on any ideas as we progress through the year. For example, if interest is found to have a second training session a week, we could review and advise if numbers are suitable.
If you have any qualifications such as but not limited to the below that could assist the club, please contact Julie Mohrwinkel our secretary. The specific areas are:
- First Aid
- RSA
- Specific Medical Skills – Strapping, etc
