Toronto Dingos Div.2 continued their unbeaten run with a hard fought 22-point win over last year’s premiers Broadview Hawks in slippery conditions last Saturday.
The early morning start had no effect on the Div 2 Dingos as they began the game with pressure, probing a sluggish Hawk’s defence at every opportunity.
Ben Kavenagh, voted best on ground, was returning to the game after 17 years in absence, and took the game on and marked every ball that was fed to him scoring two important goals on his club debut.
Alvin Ranchhod produced a solid performance, covering a lot of ground and coming close to few goals of his own. Mick McFarlane, supported by Andrew Crawford and Drew Bremner, applied a real punch in the guts, transforming the midfield into an assembly line of relentless delivery to the Dingos forwards and also managed to kick his first goal for the season. Bremner, who was playing his first game for the Div 2 Dingos of the season, put in a fantastic performance in the ruck, winning the taps and creating turnovers with his long-armed spoils.
Kavenagh’s impact in the first half was succeeded by the combination of Camilo Serpa and Ryan Cross in the forward line who both linked up superbly in the final two quarters. Serpa’s hard running and intelligent positioning was too much for the older legs of the Hawks rear-guard resulting in a hat-trick of hard fought goals for the Dingos. Cross continued to influence the half forward line making great space and winning the ball comfortably in what was his best performance yet for the Red and Black.
The Irish duo of Robert Fitzhugh and Gary Conlon worked hard closing down the opposition and spoiling their run of play at half back but overall the defence had a quiet time for most of the game. Full back Steve Gordon continued his good run of form and put in another solid display to quell a Hawks revival in the third quarter.
Round three will see the second-placed Dingos take on the Rebels who are yet to secure a win so far this season. Round three vs Rebels: Friday June 21 @ 6:15 p.m down at Humber South.
