Dees have strong showing at season openers in Guelph

The Demons opened their season with a road trip to Guelph, which began aboard a big yellow school bus. The excitement was palpable as both teams were hungry for a win after a long 2016 season.

Having worked hard over the off-season, both at recruitment and on skills and fitness, the Dees were nervous but ready.

The Division 1 men's team started the day at noon with a strong performance against the Broadview Hawks who ended 2016 alongside the Dees at the bottom of the ladder. Both teams continue to claim a rebuilding year and, while the game remained competitive throughout, the Hawks' infamous Aussies were tough to stop with Shuttleworth and Dullard kicking 9 goals between them. They were nonetheless well-contained by the Demons' defence. Allen Kim reminded us why we were eager for his return and team captains from 2016 (Floppy and Travis) and the 2017 skipper (Hendy) combined for 4 of the Dees' 7 goals.

Next up were the women at 2pm. The new recruits were hopped up on nerves and adrenaline, especially after watching the men play their opener. Claire Millgate was taken out of the game before it even started when an errant ball from a spectator's kick to kick during the warmup gave her signs of concussion, leaving Dees with a little less experience on the field. Everyone stepped up, however, and the women showed the competition that they are not to be considered out of contention for this year's flag. This despite not clocking a win in 2016. Standouts on the day (other than EVERYONE in this team effort) were Laura Trafford who facilitated most goals from the midfield, Steph Barker the rookie ruckman, and Teresa Moore, the 2017 skipper.
