The early minutes produced few highlights but great tackling, particularly from Ryan Grant and James Box stopped the early thrusts from Forest Hill. Our defence was up to the task and Pat Dowling’s dashing play from the backline created a number of our forward entries. While the opposition managed the first goal, Gus Walker’s goal levelled the scores late in the first quarter. At the first break, we were a solitary point behind.
The second quarter gave Surrey the chance to show some good handball and tackling skills with Edan Runge’s well-judged mark preventing Forest Hill from going forward. A set shot goal from Dan Smart loosed the shackles. With some great tackling, including a beauty from Ben Peters, we started to dominate the quarter. Paul Collopy showed great vision for a handpass to Boxy for a kick forward and quick kick from Nick Tanner off the ground for a goal. Boxy followed this up with a great snap after a Forest Hill player dropped a mark.
Rungey was marking well in defence and showing good dash, while our forwards were putting plenty of pressure on their opponents.
We began the third quarter with strong play from Tom Veitch taking the ball in a crowd of players and snapping truly from just outside the goal square, but Forest Hill were lifting, but only managed a string of behinds. Highlights of this period were a good smother from Jonny Brisbane and a great mark from Runge from the kick-in, but Surrey were about to lift to another level. After tempers started to fray, Surrey kept their focus on the main game. Liam Hauser did his best Nick Reiwoldt impression, taking a solid contested mark and goaling, before James Box showed more swing than Mitch Starc with his snapped goal from the boundary line.
While the boys had a comortable lead, there was still a quarter to play. The intense forward pressure eventually caused a Forest Hill player to run too far and from the resultant free the ball went forward and Oliver Anderson snapped truly. Soon after a precise Callum Ternes pass found Liam Mooney whose set shot from a good mark put the result beyond doubt. While Forest Hill managed a couple of goals, Surrey finished off with a goal to Tom Rogers from a down field free.
A great team effort with all players contributing!
