Brownlow honour for Newbridge

Brownlow honour for Newbridge

It was a night to remember for Newbridge Football Club president Ron Trimble who attended the 2011 Brownlow Medal count on Monday night.

The Newbridge president was invited to the AFL’s night of nights as part of a Channel 7 initiative to honour communities hit by natural disasters.

Mr Trimble was joined by club representatives from Queensland’s Lockyer Valley, Christchurch and Japan, whose football clubs suffered from severe floods and earthquakes this year

The experience included the glitz and glamour of Brownlow night as well as the opportunity to mingle with some of football’s elite.

“We went down Sunday for a rehearsal and then got to attend the Brownlow night as well as the after party,” Mr Trimble said about his experience at the Brownlow.

“It was just huge.

“The people who attend are a range of football people of all ages and it was just a fantastic experience.”

The Newbridge Football Club was honoured with a special Sherrin football on the night.

“The ball we received was signed by all the past Brownlow medallists that attended the function,” Mr Trimble said.

“To have it in our club memorabilia will be something pretty special.”

The rebuilding process is looking positive for the Newbridge Club, which experienced extensive damage in the January floods.

Mr Trimble said this week marked an important point in the club’s rebuilding.

“Today will hopefully be a milestone day in that the funding is expected to be finalised,” he said “Demolition should then begin in a few weeks’ time.”

  • Mr Trimble said he was confident football and netball would return to the town next year.

“We’d like to have the facility open by the end of April next year,” he said.

“We certainly will be playing on the ground in 2012.”
