EUROA RESERVES COME UP SHORT AGAINST THE ECHUCA BOMBERS
As our Reserves team prepared for the contest against their opposition it was felt by all our Euroa supporters that our team would have to bring their best to the game to compete against their opponents. This was not to be the case as our reserves team were not able to get their game going and come to terms with the game plan of the Echuca Bombers. It appeared that the opposition were prepared to push players up to the stoppages out numbering our players allowing them to win the ball and move the ball quickly into their forward line.
In the initial part of the first quarter we had the opportunities to score two to three goals which would have given us a good start to the game but we did not convert and this became a real problem as we could have placed pressure on the Echuca Bombers but by not converting the pressure was placed back on our team. The pressure the Echuca players placed on our players resulted in turnovers by our team
First quarter scores Euroa 1.2.8 Echuca 2.1.13
The second quarter was where most supporters thought the game was lost with the Echuca team being able to score four goals and stopping our team from troubling the scoreboard during the quarter. A number of turnovers and decision making resulted in the Echuca team taking a twenty nine point lead at the half time break. This was a bad quarter of football as our players tended to panic not using the ball well when they had the opportunity to do so and then not being strong when defensive contests were required.
Half time scores Euroa 1.2.8 Echuca 6.1.37
In the third quarter our team matched their opponents on the scoreboard to win the quarter the continued worrying point was that we were not able to stop the game plan of the opposition we were not able to man them up and in many situations the Echuca players were free with much room to move in whereas we appeared to always be under pressure.
Third Quarter scores Euroa 4.5.29 Echuca 9.3.57
Facing a twenty eight point deficit our players faced a huge task to overhaul their opponents in this quarter but to the players credit they gave their all in the last quarter but from all their efforts they were not able to hit the lead. During the quarter the ball was for the majority of the time in our forward line but we were not able to convert on the scoreboard scoring one gaol six behinds whilst holding the Echuca team to just four behinds.
Although the team struggled to get the game going they displayed much spirit in the last quarter taking the game right up to the Echuca team
Final Scores Euroa 5.11.41 Echuca 9.7.61
Although the team fell short on the day they are to be congratulated on their performances during the season. Coach Linc Mckernan has worked hard to ensure that we have had numbers each week to field a team. Thanks to all the thirds players who helped out during the year and to a number of fellows who pulled on the black and white jumper to help their mates out.
Again well done to Linc Mckernan who took on the coaching position it is hard to coach and play but he was able to do this with much help from Brad Gleeson running things from the bench when he was unable to play after surgery on his leg. It could be seen during the year that the group were behind Linc and Brad.
In closing as mentioned earlier we had to bring our best game to match the opposition to win the game we did not do this but even so we were competitive showing much spirit in the last quarter having the chance to snatch victory if we had converted our chances.
