B Grade into Grand Final!

An excited B Grade side took to their home court on Saturday for their Semi Final clash against Echuca. The girls were playing for a Grand Final spot and were determined to not need the extra week to get there.

Echuca was one of the two sides to defeat Euroa throughout the season and the team were keen to ensure a repeat performance did not occur. From the very first whistle, Marnie Burton was dynamite in the goal ring by putting the first 5 goals of the game onto the scoreboard. This set Euroa up nicely for a dominant quarter of netball.

Bec Bath made sure Echuca knew very early on that Euroa were out for the win through her physicality and strong contesting of the ball in and out of the ring. Euroa managed to take a 6-goal lead into the first break. No changes were made at quarter time and Euroa again got out to a superb start in the second quarter, again putting on the first 5 goals. Echuca started to find their groove and some rushed transition play by Euroa saw the Bombers also get a little run of goals and put the pressure back onto Euroa. Euroa went into half time leading 20-16.

The third quarter saw Mary Frewen take to the court in Wing Defence and she was able to provide some height over the edge of the ring, allowing Bec Bath and Kelly Hill to turn the ball over under the Echuca goal ring. With some excellent attacking play from Tayla Robinson, the mid court opened up nicely allowing Megan O’Bree to work her magic and feed the impossible into the goal ring. Marnie Burton continued her accurate shooting and was assisted well by Jenni McCluskey.

A 13-goal to 6 quarter allowed Euroa to take a 12-goal lead into the last quarter. Emily McMahon entered the game at Wing Defence and was able to provide some assistance to create defensive turnovers and work the ball back down into the attack.

Euroa remained composed and converted at each opportunity to hold onto the 12-goal lead right up to the final whistle. Euroa defeated Echuca, 42-30 to book their place in the Grand Final.  It was great to see so many supporters on the sidelines to cheer the girls into Euroa’s first Goulburn Valley League Grand Final since 1983!

The team will take on either Echuca or Shepparton Swans at Deakin Reserve on Sunday 22nd September.
