Centrals first game for season 2018 at home on Civilex Oval was against Inverleigh who everyone is predicting will win the flag in the GDFL this year. They lined up against Centrals with much more experience and size but you never know with youth. A quick goal to Josh Sloan saw Centrals hit the scoreboard first but Inverleigh then started to win the contests with bigger bodies and strength to wrest the ball away from Centrals younger group. The wind was creating havoc all over the ground and made scoring very hard for both sides but it was keeping Centrals in touch as Inverleigh had 6.13 to half time compared with Centrals 1.2. Centrals needed to keep believing in the game plan and their own abilities if they were to arrest the gap and get back into the game. The loss of ruckman Brayden Sneddon and forward Nic Bauld in the first half certainly did not help the cause or the composite of the side and when Jackson Smith also had to leave the ground in the third the side was really up against it. To the boys credit they fought it out against a quality outfit right to the end and the patch where Centrals kicked 4 unanswered goals showed they never gave the game away even when it certainly looked impossible.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 8.6 – 54 to Inverleigh 12.20 - 93
Goal Kickers:- L Speziale 3, B Leonard 2, J Sloan, A Sleep-Dalton & D Skinner 1 each.
Best Players:- N Johnson, B Wilson, D Chesterman, A Sleep-Dalton, B Taylor & Z Anthony.
The Reserves after their game against East Geelong were certainly looking to improve against Inverleigh and at half time it did not show any with not a single score on the board. It must be mentioned the conditions were horrendous with gale force winds and rain but the opposition could score so it was not impossible. In the second half the side were able to pick up and actually outscore Inverleigh for the half but the damage had been done. Perhaps next week we can continue to improve and put a whole game together. Come on lets put in at training and get our fitness up and show the competition we will not be beaten like we have again.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 3.2 – 20 to Inverleigh 6.12 – 48
Goal Kickers:- C McNaught 2 & T Ralph 1.
Best Players:- J Zoppi, K Butty, A Briggs, M DeLuca, C Gusling & C McNaught.
All games next weekend are at Corio and we will be looking to show further improvement. A big day assured.
