This game against Geelong West also vying for a finals spot was the game that we just had to win to be sure that a position in the five could be there if the team continued to win the games in front of them. Coming off the bye and with a couple of injuries which were covered from returning players it was make or break for both sides. The opening quarter was played just as it would be expected close and hard fought. Centrals in the second quarter got a 22 point break which is not much in modern footy but was in this low scoring contest. West came back but really both sides struggled to kick goals and a 20 point gap at the last change was still a good margin in the context of the game. It was not to be though as Centrals just could not kick a goal in the last quarter kicking 4 points only and in fact kicking 1 goal 9 in the last half to be overrun and go down by 3 points. A very disappointing end to the game and something we have endured in a few games this year. Now every game is a must win and hope a couple of others go our way.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 8.16 – 64 to Geelong West 10.7 - 67
Goal Kickers:- D Bauld 2, Boyd 2, C Koutzamanis 2, K Butty & B Taylor 1 each.
Best Players:- S Browne, T Nyawela, J Smith, J Sloan, A Sleep-Dalton & J Fletcher.
The Reserves with a few of the Colts playing allowed Geelong West to get a big break in the first quarter and they then tried to play catch up football for the remainder of the game but even though nearly breaking even for the last three quarters just could not bridge the gap and made the end result look far worse than it may have been. Had a few good players with Daniel Skinner and Jack Wighton focal but left too far to few.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 6.3 – 39 to Geelong West 14.12 – 96
Goal Kickers:- J Wighton 2, L O’Malley, J Zoppi, M DeLuca & J Luggeri 1 each.
Best Players:- D Skinner, J Wighton, J Despott, J Drohomirecki & J Zoppi.
Next week at home on Civilex Oval is the rematch of the Williamson/Gillett Trophy and one we need to win to keep those faint finals hope alive for our senior footballers.
