A Draw At Anakie

Firstly we congratulate the Anakie club for their new changeroom facilities, what a great new area for all the clubs to enjoy when they visit. We need to get our council there to show them what Geelong Council can do.

Well the game ended in a draw but the playing group would have been very disappointed as was most of the spectators in the result. Playing Anakie at Anakie is hard enough as we always struggle for whatever reason. Anakie were winning the centre and this enabled them to get away well and hold a slight advantage by the end of the first quarter. Centrals were struggling to find space and move the ball as they have in past games as Anakie applied a lot of pressure on the ball carrier. In the second Centrals kicked 5 goals and held a slight advantage but a late goal to Anakie got them back to 8 points.

The third was no different except for the best mark seen for quite a while by Zac Anthony over the pack was disallowed by the umpire for whatever reason. But what could you expect it was one of those days and at the last break it was a goal the difference. We needed a break and got one with the first goal and should have had the next, but it was given a point, maybe sun was in their eyeys. Probably the last straw we all thought but no, as Anakie kicked three quick goals and the scores were level. Who would break but no one did and at the end of the game the scoreboard showed a draw. You may say a fitting result for the Gillet/Williamson cup but we could not see it that way after the game.

Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 13.11 – 89 to Anakie 13.11 - 89

Goal Kickers:- B Leornard 3, N Bauld 2, J Sloan 2, D Skinner 2, H Willems, D Boyd, J Smith & C Linehan-Cunningham 1 each.

Best Players:- B Wislon, B Leonard, N Johnson, D Boyd, J Smith & C Lineham-Cunningham.

The Reserves had the upper hand for the first half even though not many goals were being put on the scoreboard. Both defenses well on top and made a big score not possible. Anakie got a couple back in the third and with the low scoring were back in the game. Centrals would need to lift and not allow Anakie to overrun them as happened last week. The difference in the last quarter was Matty Malual both in the last line of defense but also in the ruck where he Also was being instrumental in keeping Anakie at bay. It was a better last quarter than last week but the boys would be very disappointed they allowed Anakie back in it. More training time is still needed to get even more fitness into those bodies.

Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 8.3 – 51 to Anakie 5.7 – 37

Goal Kickers:- L Gibbs 2, R Quarrier, C McNaught, S Weatherley, A Salt-Hill, K Butty & J Despott 1 each.

Best Players:- M Malual, L Speziale, S Weatherley, M DeLuca, R Quarrier & K Butty.

A reminder all games next weekend are at Winchelsea and hope to get back on the winning list and to show further improvement. A big day assured.
