First Up Win for Season 2018

Centrals first game for season 2018 was against East Geelong with new coaches in Nick Smith and Simon Calbert two well know faces to many at Centrals over the past years and a host of new and young players ready to show the new club look. The group had been working on their game plan for many weeks in the pre-season and it was time to try in on the big stage. Centrals got away to a 4 goal start with great pressure around the ball and continuous forward movement put Easts under pressure and it showed on the scoreboard. As quickly as Centrals had got the advantage Easts worked their way back into the game, but to Centrals credit the players fought back to lead at quarter time. East with the breeze in the second just could not find any advantage due to Centrals pressure and the persistent running the ball out of defense and then making sure the same pressure was applied in the forward line to keep the ball in at all costs. After a very even first part of the third quarter Centrals got the breaks they needed and the margin grew and with the same pressure and run in the last Centrals came away with a strong win first up. Congrats to the young playing group who never gave up on any contest and will only improve as the season progress’s.

Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 18.8 – 118 to East Geelong 9.5 - 59

Goal Kickers:- N Bauld 3, J Smith 3, D Boyd 2, D Skinner 2, B Taylor 2, L Cachia, D Chesterman, M Malual, A Sleep-Dalton J Sloan & B Quarrier 1 each.

Best Players:- A Sleep-Dalton, B Taylor, N Bauld, J Smith, B Leonard & S Browne.

The Reserves also playing East Geelong were never in the hunt against a very strong Easts Reserves team and were taught a real attacking football lesson and how to run the ball. New Coaches in Stephen Morgan & Ryan Quarrier must be wondering how good the Reserves comp will be after this display from Easts. Centrals if they are to match it with sides like this need to get to training on every night and be a lot fitter than we are.

Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 4.6 – 30 to East Geelong 17.14 – 116

Goal Kickers:- C McNaught 2 & J Despott 2.

Best Players:- J Despott, S Weatherley, N Johnson, C McNaught, J Jardine & A Briggs.

Colts Round 1 vs St Joseph 2
The boys started well by winning the Toss.

We were going in with height so we decided to have an abundance of height up forward with,Davies,Smith,Cachia,
Widdicombe,Parker & Leggieri.
The forward line functioned really well kicking the first 3 goals of the game.
St Joseph finished the quarter with the last 2.

2nd quarter wasn’t a good one as we only kicked 1 behind for the quarter, our entries into our forward line seemed to be going to the opposition.
We let St Joseph back into contest with our wayward kicking.

With some great advice from our senior coach we made some moves.
We moved Smith back to Centre Half back to help out Tegg,Scarborough,
Barton-Ancliffe who had been really solid all day.

Our pace started to shine through at the start of the 3rd quarter, with Lineham-Cunningham, Paul,Cook & Willems starting to wear down their opponents.

Our Midfield was starting to dominate as well, led by Insall who hadn’t lost a hitout all day, and we were starting to get Centre clearances with Camilleri, Wilson & Lineham-Cunningham communicating and getting the ball going forward.

4th Quarter we started 1 point down,
So we moved Smith back to Full Forward and Leggieri back to Centre Half Back
The moved to seemed to work as Smith kicked 3 in the last quarter to ice the game.

Our entries in the forward line were hitting the right areas and the forward line was functioning really well.

Great start to the season boys.
With so many new boys to the club we will only get better.

All games next weekend are at home on Civilex Oval against Inverleigh who are expected to be the benchmark in 2018. A big day assured.
