Centrals Back To Reality Against Bell Post Hill

Werribee Centrals were looking forward to playing last years Premiers at Galvin Park even though still having a few injuries which would weaken the line up. A win would see their position in the final five just about cemented if it could be pulled off. Josh Richmond made it back into the seniors but David Clonan was still unavailable due to injury which would weaken the backline. It was a torrid start with neither side getting any ascendency as Centrals attacked with no result and the same was happening when Bell Post Hill went forward. Phil Jones was getting plenty of the ball around the ground and finally David Leatch was able to hold a mark and goal. A snap from Tyron Montebruno also a goal but that was it for the quarter. Bell Post Hill finally got into gear and the goals came as they outran Centrals and started to play that procession game they are famous for and went in at half time with a five goal lead.

After the break it did not get any better as Bell Post dictated the game and even though Centrals kicked five goals for the quarter they never seemed to be in control of the play when they did it. Bell Post Hill on the other hand were able to break lines and get clear for much easier possessions as Centrals just seemed to look for the easy options rather than man up and make Bell Post earn their kicks. This was especially noticeable when the ball rebounded and Bell Post Hill ran in numbers.

Already seven goals behind Centrals needed to play hard in the last but it did not happen as players were prepared to still allow their opposition player to run free and dictate play. Centrals players need to play a full game against these better sides and they can do it if focused enough. Everyone saw that against ladder leaders Thomson.

Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 6.9 – 45 to Bell Post Hill 17.12 - 114

Goal Kickers:- T Montebruno 2, J Richmond, S Murphy, D Leatch & P Jones 1 each.

Best Players:- P Jones, S Simmons, T Bray, R Cornish, L Phipps & N Lovell.

Centrals Reserves with many players missing due to injury in both the Seniors and Reserves played a game of two halves so different it would have been easy to mistake who was playing or watching two different games. Centrals first half was very disappointing with no real desire shown to man up or make the play and be content to watch the game rather than be instrumental in it. The second half was different, perhaps it was warming up outside but Peter Grey, Rick Alagona, Andrew Zammit and Jace Walters back in the fold were outstanding in kick starting the revival. Centrals started to run, kick to position and make leads for their runners around the ground and slowly got back into the game. Centrals finally got in front in the last part of the game and held on for a much needed win and now have to do it against East Geelong next week.

Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 7.8 – 50 to Bell Post Hill 6.13 – 49

Goal Kickers:- D Giarrusso 3, N Byrne, D Golotta, J Pace & M De Luca 1 each.

Best Players:- P Grey, R Alagona, A Zammitt, J Pace, J Walters, N Beasley & C Wilson.

Centrals U 18s playing Barwon Heads weren’t at their best in the first half as well against an improved Barwon Heads side kicking only one goal. They turned things around gradually in the second half through a harder attack on the ball and a return to team disciplines and structures. Six wins in a row now to keep top spot in the Colts Division 2 but it is an even competition so the boys need to kep building momentum towards finals time.

Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 10.11 – 71 to Bell Post Hill 7.10 – 52

Goal Kickers:- L Cachia 2, M Gatti 2, B Wharton 2, D Camilleri, C Hockins, B Wilson & J Wilson 1 each.

Best Players:- C Chesterman, G Uren, C Hockins, D Camilleri, M Gatti & J Wighton.

This week Centrals are at East Geelong another team above them on the ladder and will be looking for a much better showing than this weeks display in what could be a must win game.
