Under 14 Div 3 Girls - Grand Final

There had been a suggestion that every team needs to lose at least one game before heading into a grand final, so it was perhaps fortuitous that our U14 Girls played their U16 counterparts in a practice match last Sunday and lost - good to have that monkey off our backs!

Besides the praccy match, we headed into our Grand Final unbeaten for the season, although the Waverley Hawks had pushed us pretty hard on the previous occasions we had met. We knew they'd be taking the GF really seriously, so were not surprised to see them at Le Page Park warming up nearly 90 minutes before game time. Our girls, however, were not going to be unsettled by the Hawks - our team spirit and enthusiasm were evident from the moment we arrived. The City girls had picked their "tunes" and warmed-up with a level of focus that showed how much they wanted to take the flag.

Once the formalities of Grand Final Day were over and the ball was bounced, our girls showed that they meant business. It was only a couple of minutes into the game and our captain, Molly Doolan, kicked a goal and the coaches and parents all breathed a small sigh of relief. From there, it was a game where there wasn't too much that separated the two teams; we tackled a bit harder than they did, we did a better job locking the ball in our forward 50, our back-line repelled them whenever they did get some momentum, and our midfielders ran the ball to our forwards and then gave them the space to do their job beautifully. All-in-all, our girls stuck to the game that they had played all season but just did it with a new level of intensity.

While we managed to keep the Hawks scoreless throughout, Charly Murphy scored us further goals in each of the next three quarters, and Cleo Kemp scored her first goal of the season in the dying moments of the last quarter. What a great way to finish. The next half hour is a bit of a blur with lots of group photos, medals, pats on backs, high fives, and the loudest singing of "Oh when the saints...." you'll ever hear. Final Score: 5.3-33 to 0.0-0.
