Colair Canberra Nationals get 4th Win

The game against the Hornsby Spiders was the third home game for the Colair Canberra Nationals, and they were looking to secure the win before hitting the road for the next 3 games. The first 5 mins of the game saw them break out to a 16-3 lead on 55% shooting, which led into a 25-14 point spread by the end of the 1st quarter. Kellie Abrams finished the quarter with 8 points from a combination of long range shots and penetration to the rim, and was well supported by Hannah Lewis inside with 7 points.

Hornsby, whose roster included two Sydney Flames WNBL squad members, reacted well in the 2nd quarter and closed the gap to 6 with some tough finishes in the key. Teagan Burke helped the Nationals cause in this quarter with 6 points with some attacking and tough drives to the hoop.

After the major break the Colair Canberra Nationals came out of the change rooms with renewed energy and focussed on using their inside targets. Hannah Lewis presented well inside and the Canberra perimeters found her with their passes. She ended up having 8 points for the quarter on her way to a game high 20 points.

The 4th and final quarter again saw Hornsby respond and it was a grind for both teams. It eventually came down to the lead that the Nationals built in the 1st & 3rd quarter that won the game for the home team by 9.

"I think we came out of the blocks with a great start, but we need to be able to keep the pressure on and control the game better. We had a great 1st and 3rd quarter but let them back into the contest in the 2nd & 4th. That's not what we want to be about" stated head Coach Sandy Tomley.

"We will learn from this and take it into the next part of the season where we play 3 out of 4 games on the road."

"Hannah Lewis did a great job inside for us and had poise on her finishes. Lauren Jansen had a tough defensive assignment on one of their play makers and did very well in this. Kellie Abrams set the intensity early with her offensive assertiveness and defensive intelligence on a player we did not know much about who could have caused us issues. Teagan Burke just keeps getting better each game in our system and provided a spark off the bench."

Tomley said that "we can always improve as a group each game and that's what we are working towards. We want to aspire as a program, but we need to perform consistently to reach our goals."
