Under 18 Match Report Round 12

The backline, led by Jake Cosmai and Brendan Donahoo, was combining well and became increasingly miserly as the game progressed. They were able to hold the opposition scoreless in the third quarter, which went a long way towards setting up a much deserved win. Rei Ballinger read the play well and took many telling defensive marks. Sam Le Carpentier and Dylan Holton shut down their opponents and gave them limited opportunities. Both players concentrated particularly well and sustained their defensive efforts for four quarters. This enabled Jake and ‘Donny’ to take on more attacking roles with strong runs out of our defensive zone.

Caleb Baird and Brock Zeidler dominated the centre hitouts and our midfield began to capitalise on the glut of ball being provided for them. Brock was called upon to play a number of roles and acquitted himself extremely well in all positions. With Kye Stoneham, Dalton Williams and Sam Wilson on top across the centre, our forward line was being given many scoring opportunities. Zak Clancy was finding the swirling breeze fairly testing, but always created a contest. This brought Arlo Haycroft, Zac Ryan and John Selvage into the game around goal. All boys put on some great defensive pressure when we didn’t have the ball and this brought about many turnovers and some bonus shots on goal. Jamie McBrien and ‘Pedro’ Andrews (playing with a severely lacerated right hand) scored multiple goals from half forward and, together with a tireless effort from Brad Cvilikas (4 goals), provided the bulk of the team’s score. Jakson Shearer and ‘Crusty’ Fitzgerald on the wings ran hard to get into space and created countless forward thrusts. James Pyritz produced a top second half of football (after making it into the ‘Guinness Book of Records’ for the most 50m penalties conceded in a half of football) with many strong marks in defence.

The boys put on a great display of team football, particularly after quarter time. All players across the middle of the ground worked hard to transfer the play to the attacking side of the ground and our forward line made sure they provided leading targets to the right parts of the field. This enabled us to kick a winning score.

Best players: Kye Stoneham, Sam Wilson, Dalton Williams, Jakson Shearer, Brad Cvilikas and Rei Ballinger
