Key Breakers Founder Makes AFLSC Hall of Fame
A huge congratulations to the Breakers Own David Ward who was recently inducted into the AFL Sunshine Coast Hall of Fame in recognition of his contribution to the code on the Coast and in particular his role in starting our great AFL Club here in Coolum.
Here's some background:
David Ward – On the back of a 2004 public meeting to form a Junior Football Club in Coolum, David took on the role of inaugural President, a busy role he performed for four years. Jobs to be done included securing a playing venue and all the logistical needs that go with that.
The ‘built-from-scratch’ club formed a very strong family-first culture under David’s leadership. He still continues to provide strong support to the club in regard to facility development and mentoring.
He was awarded a league Service Award in 2008. In 2009, he joined the AFLSCJ Management Committee and served there until 2013 with two years as President. During that time he was a very strong leader and advocate for umpire development and appreciation.
He also keenly oversaw the initiation of the Youth Girls competition that today is arguably the strongest in the State. David has also done plenty of umpiring in the past 3 years and in recent years given freely of his time as a Tribunal Panel member.
David is father of 2014 Premiership Under 16 Captain Rohan Ward, is husband of Bev Ward and a tragic Bulldogs /GWS supporter
When we contacted current Club President Lynden Griffith's he was none the wiser (letter from AFLSC must still be in the mail) but he was overjoyed that David had been recognised.
"David's contribution to not only the Coolum Beach Breakers JAFC but to AFL here on the Sunshine Coast can not be under estimated.
With 160+ players running around in Breakers colours this year it is a credit to David and all volunteers who give up their time to give our kids a chance to play the game we all love.
David¹s legacy lives on throughout our club with the David Ward Trophy struck acknowledging the best player in the finals that will be highly sought after again this year with 4 our teams competing for the ultimate prize." he said.
Well done David on this wonderful and well deserved accolade
