Marcellin U12 Girls Melbourne Tournament Wrap-up July 2011
Last weekend seven of our Marcellin U11 girls took part in the 2011 Melbourne Tigers Junior Basketball Tournament playing as an U12 team. the girls came from 4 different teams but quickly bonded as a unit as was evident by their results.
Their first game was on Friday evening against Nunawading Spectres. Not knowing what to expect, the girls started out hard and managed a comfortable win against Nunawading defeating them 24 to 10.
With Saturday shaping up to be a big day, our girls turned-up early for their first of 3 games for the day.
Meeting Bentleigh A who were fresh and ready to go, playing their first game as opposed to our girls having played the night before. Within the first few minutes, Bentleigh A looked to be a challenging team, but soon fell away and we had a comfortable win 27 to 13.
Coming into our third game for the tournament and our second for the day, we met another Bentleigh team, Bentleigh B. By this stage we were starting to show signs of fatigue and the game was close from the start. We also sustained an injury in this game with one of our girls rolling her ankle in the first half and not playing the rest of the game leaving us with 6 players With only a couple of minutes to go, and only a couple of points the difference, our girls put in an extraordinary effort to over run Bentleigh B and take the win in an exiting finish 19 to 10.
The final game for the day was against the Cranbourne Cavaliers who had convincingly won all of their games by between 20 - 30 points. The game started with Cranbourne putting us under a lot of pressure and taking an early lead. We managed to settle and start our comeback just before halftime. Unfortunately with only 7 girls, one had rolled her ankle in the previous game and another was coming back from a cold she had all week we started to slow down and lost to Cranbourne by 15.
The grand final started with some fantastic defense from both teams seeing the score with 10 minutes to go we were only 1 point down (Marecllin 4 and Cranbourne 5). Cranbourne then managed 3 goals to our 1 to go into the halftime break with a 5 point lead. our girls gave up every bit of energy they had left but could not match Cranbourne who had 9 players and that was the difference in the end as they won by 11.
The weekend finished with the girls receiving a runners-up trophy and a well earned rest. Thank you to all the parents for taking the girls to the games and helping with the scoring and bench duties and thank you to the club for their support.
A big congratulations to the girls who were a great team to coach.
