Papatoetoe AFC Warriors G12 makes it 2 in a row – AFC Championship Title

My second-year coaching for the Papatoetoe AFC G12 Warriors and so far we have won AFC Championship two titles, 2016 Division 3 and 2017 Division 2.

A milestone achievement from the players with tremendous support from the parents we managed to win back to back titles.

As a Coach, I always focussed on the playing and kept on reminding my players that coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is success.  It begins in the head of each player with a desire to achieve and a willingness to take responsibility. Every member of the team has a purposeful role to play and therefore a responsibility to him. Players were reminded and taught responsibility, individually and collectively, from the very start of their involvement in soccer. The power of a strong, collective team mindset is based upon the conviction that every single player can be trusted to carry out his responsibilities.

Generally, my pre-game talks were about our expectations, the players’ belief in themselves, and their trust in one another. Not all players come from a working-class background, but maybe their fathers do, or their grandfathers and I found it useful to remind players how far they have come. I would tell them that having a work ethic is very important. It seemed to enhance their pride. I would remind them that it is trust in one another, not letting their mates down, that helps build the character of a team.  Being positive and adventurous and taking risks—that was our style.

Summing 2016/2017 our RECORDS so far:

We consecutively won 16 games in a row.

Altogether played 30 games, won 23, draw 2 and lost 5.

My challenge to myself going forward is to continue to grow, to develop for the better and be passionately dedicated with pride on what is in front of us.
