Cougars crowned Champions

Congratulations to the Cougars who claimed the AFF Division 3 Championship after a thrilling 2-0 victory over Bucklands Beach in the Play-Off Final.

The sun was out in full force at Rogers Park and things were certainly looking bright for the Cougars before the game, both on and off the pitch.   Spirits were high and the ladies fully focussed on the job in hand.  This was our day right?  The next 80 mins would answer that question.

In the opening 20 minutes it was intense, a close game with both teams battling for supremacy in midfield and goal scoring opportunities few and far between.

Then the Cougars got a Free kick about 35 yards out from the goal.  Katherine McDowall stepped up and Sav shouted 'Give it more!'.  Kat certainly did that and smashed the ball over the wall, towards the goal, it kept rising and then looped over the keepers head into the back of the net much to the delight of her team mates, coaches, Reds supporters in the crowd and of course Kat herself!

Savuth must have given the Speech of all Speeches at half time because the Cougars came back out with plent of passion, flair and commitment in the second half.

The Cougars played some excellent passages of play that cut through the Bucklands Beach defence (think knife to butter) only for the keeper to make a couple of outstanding saves and deny what would have been close to 'Goal of the Season stuff'.

With about 5 mins left of the clock the referee's whistle blew and Toey were awarded a penalty.  Brittany Olsen-Verner calmly placed the ball on the spot and after what seemed like an eternity the ref's whistle blew again.  After a short run up Brittany unleashed a rocket that flew to the left of the keeper and into the goal!  A well placed penalty and one that doubled Toey's lead and put one hand on the Cup!

Bucklands Beach restarted the game and it wasn't long before full time....  The COUGARS were CHAMPIONS!

Girl of the Game was awarded to the team and thoroughly deserved.  Everyone played their part in this victory from the players who took the pitch, to the coaches, family and supporters who cheered them on to victory!
