Get to know your Coach - Under 17's Andrew Markby

Andrew has been associated with Sandgate Juniors for 10 years, and has coached for 8 of those.  Ranging from under 8’s through to 14’s, 2015 will be his first stint at coach for the Under 17’s.

Andrew started playing footy in Victoria when he was 15, and played until his knee gave out at the age of 28.  He now has 3 kids of his own who are all playing AFL (U16’s & U13’s and U9’s)

Together with GD as his assistant coach, Andrew is looking to start the season strong, and to create a competitive team that can play out the game for the full 4 quarters.

His hopes for the upcoming season are simple.  “If the boys can play a better running game, and be quicker out of the centre, they can be a worthy opponent that will get noticed from the very beginning.  Match fitness and tougher centre breaks are a focus, as well as being able to end the game strongly.”

“Dealing with a new comp is going to be new, but being worthy opponents is a high priority first.”

Pre-season for the upcoming season is starting this week, with training scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4.30 till 6.00 at the Hawks grounds.   Current boys who are eligible for under 17’s are asked to come down to training.

“Keep an ear out as things are starting now.  We have to work on fitness from the start, so putting the boys through a fitness test for the upcoming season will be a priority.  Final numbers will be decided closer to the start of the season.”
