GET TO KNOW YOUR COACH - Under 12's - Michael Duff

Michael Duff has been coaching at the Hawks since 2011 and has been appointed to coach the Under 12 side in 2015.

A former sports journalist with a variety of newspapers, Michael covered the Brisbane Bears for the
Sunday Telegraph in the mid-1990s before moving on to eventually be the Sports Editor at the Sunshine Coast Daily.

Michael coached juniors at Under 8 and Under 9 level before assisting Howie Roberts with the Under 10 and Under 11 side over the past two seasons.  He is also a junior cricket coach and is currently the president of the juniors at the Sandgate Gators.

“I enjoy seeing kids learning something new and working on mastering a skill,” Michael said.

“But, at this age, they aren’t going to stick at if it stops being fun. We will be working with the boys to ensure their skills improve but in an environment where they enjoy turning up to each week.”

Michael said he was also looking to foster the boy’s love of footy and to develop the bond of playing in a team.

“We would hope that this team will be the basis of a side that goes right through the youth football together,” he said.

“We want them to learn about the football, to enjoy what a great game it is, and about developing mateship with the guys you are lining up with every week.”

The Under 12 side will also benefit from the experience of having Howie back as an assistant along with Dale Sinclair, Brett Atkins and Nick Munkley.

“I have had a really enthusiastic response from the parents which always makes the coaches’ job much easier,” Michael said.

“We really saw improvement in the team towards the end of last season and we will be working to ensure that every player is given the opportunity and support to be the best player he can be,” Michael said.

The Under 12 side commencd pre-season training on Saturday, 20 December 2014, with a light run & BBQ to ease in.
