RACISM. IT STOPS WITH ME
Why take action against racism?
While cultural diversity is central to our national
identity, the reality is that too many people in
Australia experience prejudice, discrimination and
racism on a regular basis.
Racism locks people out of social and economic
opportunities. It costs workplaces and our
economy and it works
Last year, one in seven Australians said they
experienced discrimination because of their
colour or background, a figure that has been
increasing steadily in recent years.
In February 2011, the Australian
Government announced a new
multicultural policy, ‘The People of
Australia’. A key component of the
policy is a National Anti-Racism
Strategy. The Strategy will address
racism experienced by Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander peoples in
addition to people from culturally and
linguistically diverse backgrounds.
